ECB Cari Pelatih Baru Timnas Kriket Inggris Pengganti Brendon McCullum

England and Wales Cricket Board atau ECB tengah mempertimbangkan enam hingga sepuluh nama untuk menjadi kepala pelatih baru tim nasional kriket Test Inggris menjelang seri pertandingan melawan Pakistan pada Agustus mendatang.

Langkah ini diambil setelah ECB memecat Brendon McCullum dari jabatan pelatih red-ball pada Minggu setelah tim mengalami tujuh kekalahan dalam sembilan pertandingan Test terakhir.

Selain kehilangan pelatih, tim kriket Inggris saat ini juga tidak memiliki kapten setelah Ben Stokes mengumumkan pengunduran dirinya menyusul kekalahan seri dari Selandia Baru pada akhir Juni.

Chief Executive ECB Richard Gould menjelaskan bahwa proses pemilihan pelatih baru ini akan dilakukan secara terarget melalui daftar pendek yang sudah disiapkan.

"It will be a targeted selection process. We often do a lot of work in terms of planning as to succession - I will always keep a shortlist going of coaches and various other positions and in truth, this position is probably one where the shortlist is no more than six to 10 names globally of a diverse nature." kata Richard Gould, Chief Executive ECB kepada BBC Sport.

Gould menambahkan bahwa pembicaraan mengenai posisi pelatih baru akan segera dimulai di bawah pimpinan Direktur Pelaksana Kriket Pria, Rob Key.

"In terms of conversations, they will start to happen now and [managing director of men's cricket] Rob Key will be leading on those." kata Richard Gould, Chief Executive ECB.

Pihak ECB memastikan akan menunjuk kepala pelatih terlebih dahulu sebelum menentukan kapten baru bersama Rob Key dan selektor nasional Marcus North.

"When you look at the skills we've got and the talents we've got within the team, it is a team that has been playing relatively aggressive cricket." ujar Richard Gould, Chief Executive ECB saat mengomentari gaya permainan agresif warisan McCullum.

Meskipun demikian, Gould menegaskan bahwa pelatih pengganti nantinya tidak harus selalu meniru pola permainan agresif tersebut secara mutlak.

"But there are always options for the pattern of play to change depending on what the coach wants and where the coach believes those skillsets are." ucap Richard Gould, Chief Executive ECB.

Pelatih baru diharapkan menjadi sosok individu yang mampu melengkapi keahlian para pemain yang ada guna mengeluarkan kemampuan terbaik mereka.

"It's going to have to be an individual that complements the skillsets we've got in the players and can bring the very best out of them." tutur Richard Gould, Chief Executive ECB.

ECB juga membuka peluang adanya solusi pelatih interim jika kandidat utama masih terikat komitmen dengan turnamen kriket internasional, wilayah, maupun waralaba.

"Clearly the individuals that will be within our shortlist will have other commitments - they may be international cricket, they may be county cricket, they may be franchise cricket, and we'll need to work through those." kata Richard Gould, Chief Executive ECB.

Opsi pelatih sementara ini dinilai dapat membantu organisasi dalam mengambil keputusan terbaik untuk jangka panjang.

"An interim solution could be in place if it allows us to get to the best possible decision later on down the line." tambah Richard Gould, Chief Executive ECB.

Sejumlah nama kandidat pelatih mulai bermunculan ke publik, termasuk mantan pelatih Inggris Andy Flower dan mantan pelatih Afghanistan Jonathan Trott.

"Don't even think about hitting one down [the ground], hit it into the stands!" kata Ben Stokes, Mantan Kapten Inggris mengenang instruksinya kepada Jonny Bairstow di awal era kepelatihan McCullum yang agresif, dilansir dari cricinfo.com.

Selama periode Juni 2022 hingga Juli 2026, Inggris mencatatkan 27 kemenangan dan 20 kekalahan dari total 49 pertandingan Test di bawah asuhan McCullum.

"Andy Flower would be the top target, but I think it's highly unlikely he takes the job," kata Steven Finn, Mantan Pemain Lempar Inggris mengenai spekulasi pengganti pelatih.

Mantan pemain kriket Inggris itu menilai posisi pelatih kepala tim nasional membutuhkan dana besar karena memiliki tingkat pengawasan yang jauh lebih tinggi dibanding kriket waralaba.

"I think you would need a very fat cheque book to go to Andy Flower, because the scrutiny is a level on top of what you experience in franchise cricket." cetus Steven Finn, Mantan Pemain Lempar Inggris.

Finn menambahkan bahwa kapasitas untuk berdiskusi sangat diperlukan agar pelatih dan tim dapat terus berada di pemikiran yang sama.

"You need that ability to have a debate but then come out of it on the same page. I've not been coached by Andy Flower since he was England coach but he's softened just slightly from the person he was then to the person he is now." pungkas Steven Finn, Mantan Pemain Lempar Inggris.

Nama lain seperti Jonathan Trott juga dinilai memiliki potensi besar karena memiliki karakter kepelatihan yang serupa dengan Andy Flower.

"Jonathan Trott is someone to keep an eye on because he is shaped and moulded in the form of Andy Flower, both as a player and in the way that he's coached." papar Steven Finn, Mantan Pemain Lempar Inggris.

Trott dinilai matang secara cepat setelah menangani tim nasional Afghanistan selama empat hingga lima tahun terakhir dalam situasi yang tidak menentu.

"He's had to deal with quite a volatile situation by coaching Afghanistan for the last four or five years. That would grow you up as a coach quite quickly." jelas Steven Finn, Mantan Pemain Lempar Inggris.

Pertandingan Test Inggris berikutnya dijadwalkan berlangsung di Headingley melawan Pakistan pada 19 Agustus mendatang.
