Perez Hilton Transitions to Mental Care Following Livestream Crisis

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton is now in a lucid state and transitioning into mental health recovery following a severe self-harm crisis on an Aug. 4 TikTok livestream at his Miami-area home, according to statements from his brother-in-law on Monday.

The 48-year-old personality, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., suffered severe physical injuries during the incident, including multiple lacerations and several broken bones resulting from falls. Emergency responders initially treated him for blood loss and a suspected overdose before authorities placed him under a 72-hour hold under Florida's Baker Act.

His family confirmed that after weeks of medical treatment for his physical injuries and underlying complications from a previous bout with severe sepsis, the focus of his care is shifting toward psychological rehabilitation.

Speaking on a podcast hosted by Chris Booker, Hilton's brother-in-law Tom outlined the current state of the blogger's recovery process.

"He’s going to be going into a facility that is going to focus on his mental recovery," Tom said on the podcast. "I don’t think you’re going to see him pop up in a few days."

Tom explained that the severity of the blogger's physical state required extended emergency medical care before mental health professionals could begin deeper therapy sessions.

"There was some broken bones," Tom said. "There [were] some other things stemming back from his sepsis."

Prior to the August incident, Hilton was hospitalized in Las Vegas for 21 days in March due to life-threatening sepsis. Following his release, he relocated his family to Miami in June to be closer to relatives, though family members noted he struggled with anxiety, depression, and regret over the sudden move.

"That part made sense," Tom said regarding the relocation. "There is that structure of support there [in Miami] and he did just go through that near-fatal health scare."

However, relatives noted that Hilton expressed immediate second thoughts about staying in Florida right after arriving.

"Mario, the moving truck isn’t even in Arizona yet," Tom told Perez. "You’ve been to the airport and the house and you’ve now come to the decision in your head that this was a bad idea."

Addressing the underlying triggers of the crisis, the family noted that psychiatric professionals have monitored him throughout his hospital stay, though a definitive psychological diagnosis remains undetermined.

"So, we are now just transitioning into the mental side of things," Tom explained. "The actual healing, or digging into what caused this mental break as I've called it, hasn't been discovered. I don't know if it will ever be."

While online speculation suggested the incident might be related to sepsis-induced psychosis, the family clarified that doctors have not confirmed that theory. Tom noted that Hilton's current mental condition has improved significantly despite the lack of a clear diagnosis.

"I don't know how much he does or doesn't recall," Tom said, adding that the family is avoiding questioning him directly about the event to prevent anxiety. "We will get into that more once he’s in that setting, where we’re focusing on his mental health."

Family members also stated that while Hilton was experiencing the crisis, his primary thoughts were focused on his family dynamics.

"He thought he was doing what was best for the children ... At that time, that’s what he thought," Tom said. "His kids adore him, and he’s been a present father."

Court records from Miami-Dade County show that Hilton's mother, Teresita Lavandeira, was granted temporary custody of his three minor children on Aug. 18. While Hilton was granted supervised visitation rights, court orders dictate he must receive full psychiatric clearance before seeing his children.

"They were not allowed in that section of the facility," Tom said regarding the hospital visitation restrictions. "And eventually we’ll segue them back in."

To manage public inquiries and address inaccurate reporting regarding state involvement, the family has retained legal and public relations representation.

"We were concerned about what bad information was getting out there that [Child Protective Services] may be reading that was just simply not true," Tom said.

Regarding Hilton's long-term professional career, his family indicated that his passion for pop culture journalism remains intact despite his ongoing medical treatment.

"He does what he does because he loves doing it. He got into this because he loves celebrity gossip," Tom said. "He still has love for the entertainment industry."

Hilton remains in an inpatient medical treatment facility as his family prepares for his long-term mental health rehabilitation.
