Matthew Brennan Claims Second Vuelta Stage Victory for Visma

British cyclist Matthew Brennan secured his second victory in four days for Visma-Lease a Bike at Stage 5 of the Vuelta a Espana. Brennan capitalized on a late leadout from teammates Christophe Laporte and Wout van Aert to win the bunch sprint.

The 21-year-old rider acknowledged the difficulty of competing against general classification leader Tadej Pogacar of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, noting that specific stage profiles provide opportunities for alternative outcomes.

Brennan reflected on the broader competitive landscape following his victory.

"Tadej? Phwoa," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

He expanded on the strength of the opposing team's roster.

"It's not just him, it's the team he has, they're so strong, they're diesels, they can go all day," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

Brennan emphasized that terrain variations create strategic chances for his squad.

"when the course is built in a certain way, you almost know that the chances of Pogačar are a lot slimmer than usual, and that will play into our hands a lot more," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

He noted the tactical roles played by his experienced teammates in those moments.

"That's when we have guys like Wout, strong riders who are capable of trying to follow Tadej or even to take advantage of this," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

Brennan pointed to the current parity in stage victories between the top teams.

"But we're still two and two. There's still a battle going on," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

The victory follows a prior win on Stage 2, where Van Aert countered an attack by Pogacar before the peloton organized for a final sprint. Brennan detailed the final maneuvers leading into the Stage 5 sprint finish.

"It was really important to be on Christophe's wheel, I found myself sliding on the paint on the corner so that was a bit scary, but we managed to get through it OK. Then I was able to open up my sprint exactly as I wanted to," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

He praised the tactical execution of Laporte and Van Aert in the closing kilometers.

"Christophe is one of the best leadout guys in the world, or maybe I should say he is the best lead-out? In any case, when you complement that with Wout, such a successful pairing," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

Brennan drew personal motivation from his previous success in the region during the 2025 Volta a Catalunya.

"That was quite nice, I remembered the crosswind sections in Catalunya last year, too, so they were nice memories. I was also saying to myself - I've won in this area before, maybe I could do it again," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

He expressed confidence in his personal progression during his debut Grand Tour appearance.

"So I also believed in myself, and I am very happy to finish that one off," said Matthew Brennan, Visma-Lease a Bike rider.

Regarding historical influences, Brennan cited former professional sprinter Mark Cavendish as a tactical reference point.

Brennan noted that Cavendish "would never produce the most power but was always able to finesse the peloton very well, and get himself in the position to succeed."

The Stage 5 result adds to Brennan's 2026 season achievements, which include a victory at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and stage wins at the Vuelta a Burgos. Brennan confirmed he will skip the upcoming World Championships to manage his physical recovery following the three-week race in Spain.
