North West Sparks Debate Over Alternative Style and Piercings

Thirteen-year-old North West, the eldest daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, generated widespread online discussion after appearing on the cover of British quarterly magazine Dazed featuring facial piercings, dark grills, and bright cyan hair styled into twin pigtails published Monday, Aug. 24, 2026.

The photo shoot featured West wearing a range of jewelry, including an eyebrow ring, nose and lip piercings, finger accessories, a horizontal fake bridge piercing across her nose, and a necklace decorated with keys.

During the magazine interview, West spoke about her passion for personal body modification and her parents' limits.

"They just make you your full self," West said.

She explained that her parents, Kardashian and West, drew the line at certain permanent facial procedures.

"I really want to get my bridge pierced, but I’m not allowed," West said.

West further detailed her lifestyle, contrasting her interests with those of other young teens.

"Everyone’s in love with boys, vaping, and doing all kinds of bad stuff. All I want is blue hair and piercings," West said.

The young artist credited Japanese virtual idol Hatsune Miku as her primary style inspiration.

"That’s just my twin for real," West said.

West cited the character's signature look as the key influence behind her recent physical updates.

"Her blue twin tails, of course. That’s always the inspo. Blue hair or nothing? Maybe I’ll do black in it one day," West said.

Following the release of her debut music project N0rth4evr earlier in the year, West outlined her current routine and daily preferences.

"going to rehearsal, and then going to the studio; that’s a perfect day. Or having a big show would be the most ideal day," West said.

When asked about alternative paths outside the entertainment industry, West shared her plans for employment in the upcoming year.

"What would I be? I still wanna work. I wanna work at, like, Starbucks next year.

I think I can next year ’cause I’m gonna be 14, so… I think I can. I want to have a regular job, I guess," West said.

The magazine spread sparked contrasting reactions across social media, with supporters defending her creative freedom while critics questioned the age-appropriateness of the shoot. Under California law, minors aged 13 can receive body piercings only with written parental authorization and physical parental presence during the procedure.

Kardashian previously addressed public interest in her daughter's evolving fashion during a livestream post.

"This is such a non-issue 😭," West and Kardashian posted.

During a podcast appearance on Call Her Daddy in October 2025, Kardashian offered further insight into her daughter's self-assurance.

"She’s really mature in one sense where she’ll be like, ‘Mom, I saw this, and I don’t really care that they don’t like... my blue hair or this or that,’ " Kardashian said.

Kardashian added that managing her daughter's public profile remains a continuous learning process.

"It’s really hard, and it’s really interesting because all the kids are wearing the same things … But then my daughter tries to wear it, and then I’m like, ‘okay, we’re never wearing that again,’" Kardashian said.

Kardashian noted the challenges of raising children in the spotlight.

"Unfortunately, we made that mistake in front of the whole world," Kardashian said.

West previously addressed her temporary tooth accessories during a livestream video clip.

"Why is my teeth black? Are we okay?" West said.

She quickly reassured viewers about the temporary nature of the oral jewelry.

"I could take them out," West said.
