Microsoft Announces Disc to Digital Feature for Xbox Consoles

Microsoft introduced a new disc-to-digital feature on August 26, 2026, allowing players to convert supported physical Xbox discs into digital game entitlements across Xbox One and Xbox Series X consoles.

The service, codenamed Positron, will begin testing with Xbox Insiders on August 31, 2026, before expanding to a broader rollout. Physical discs will continue to function normally, but claiming a digital license grants access to Xbox Play Anywhere on PC and handheld devices, as well as Xbox Cloud Gaming.

If a user sells or gifts a physical disc, the digital entitlement transfers to the new owner's Microsoft account upon insertion into their console.

Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox, detailed the mechanics of the transition during a Gamescom broadcast, according to reporting by The Verge and Kotaku.

"Most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games support this new feature," said Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox. "Players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game."

Ronald emphasized that the system is designed to safeguard physical purchases as distribution formats evolve, as reported by news.xbox.com.

"We’re starting with thousands of titles, and we’ll continue to add more over time," said Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox. "While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come."

He further highlighted the long-term strategic focus on player investments, as noted by Kotaku.

"For 25 years, players have invested in Xbox, and the players have really been what has made Xbox special," said Jason Ronald, VP of next generation at Xbox. "So we’re really focused on how do we honor that as we think about the next 25 years of Xbox. We just really view this as another step in making sure that your library is protected; it can move with you as technologies and formats change, and we’re going to continue to invest in game preservation and adding new capabilities just to make sure that your library continues to get better just as technology evolves."

Addressing the shifting hardware environment, Xbox chief executive Asha Sharma discussed physical media and console hardware pricing in an interview with the BBC.

"I know players love physical media, and I know there's a lot of benefits in digital media, and I want to make sure people have a choice," said Asha Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Xbox.

Sharma explained that the initial rollout encompasses a substantial portion of existing catalog discs.

"There are stacks of games on everybody's shelves," said Asha Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Xbox. "We're announcing the ability for players for 1,000 titles with physical discs to be able to have a digital entitlement."

She pointed out that legacy support remains an ongoing commitment for future hardware generations.

"We've long pioneered backwards compatibility and so you'll continue to see that as we go forward in the generations," said Asha Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Xbox.

Turning to macroeconomic factors affecting components, Sharma cited rising costs across the gaming ecosystem.

"This next generation, we have to be thinking about efficiency and affordability alongside performance," said Asha Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Xbox.

Rising component prices, particularly for memory, have been exacerbated by tech sector demand for artificial intelligence data infrastructure.

"All of the industry needs to start to innovate on affordability and efficiency. That is something that we have not had to do [previously]. But with the crisis that's currently happening in hardware and components, it is absolutely something all of us need to be thinking about and innovating on and giving people more choice in terms of how they play their console and how they purchase their console," said Asha Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Xbox.

The integration of broader tech industry trends remains central to hardware planning.

"AI is fundamentally changing a lot of things," said Asha Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Xbox. "Our job as Xbox, as we continue on in our next generation, is to take into consideration what's happening in the world and build the best experience for our players."

Reflecting on her tenure and internal operational adjustments, Sharma addressed the long-term positioning of the brand.

"Within Xbox, we haven't been healthy," said Asha Sharma, Chief Executive Officer at Xbox.

The feature launch follows Sony's announcement that new PlayStation titles will transition to digital-only releases starting in 2028.
