Kit Harington Replaces Nicholas Hoult in HBO Harry Potter Series

Actor Kit Harington has been cast as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2 of HBO's upcoming "Harry Potter" television series, replacing Nicholas Hoult who exited the project on August 24, 2026, due to scheduling conflicts.

The casting change was officially confirmed through the show's Instagram account after production schedule adjustments clashed with Hoult's prior commitments, including his role as Lex Luthor in the upcoming film Man of Tomorrow.

Harington previously voiced the pompous wizard in Audible's full-cast audiobook release of the franchise, giving him prior experience with the character ahead of the live-action production.

"It was a really simple yes, because I love the character," Harington said to Variety. "As far as cameos in a series go, you don't get much more entertaining and fun to do as an actor than Gilderoy Lockhart. It was a no-brainer."

The actor noted that he has been a fan of J.K. Rowling's book series since childhood and expressed excitement about tackling the role on screen.

"I read it, and like so many generations, I was entranced, and then I was a huge fan all through my teenage years," Harington told Deadline.

Harington elaborated further on the transition from audio recording to physical portrayal during an interview with Collider.

“Yeah, you’re the first person I’m talking to about this. It just got released. I’m thrilled.

I’ve said a million times, for anyone who cares, that I’m a huge Potter fan. I’ve got to be honest, he’s one of my favorite characters. So, to be offered to play him is a real dream.

I think he’s going to be so fun. You said, I got to play him in the audiobooks. That’s not the exact way I’ll play him in the show because it’s an audiobook, but I’ve had a taste of him and felt my way around him.

He’s just a wonderful creation,” Harington told Collider.

Reflecting on the character's personality traits during a previous featurette presentation, Harington noted the relatable vanity found in Lockhart's persona.

"I think there's a little bit of Gilderoy in all of us," Harington said in an Audible featurette.

Harington joins an ensemble cast led by newcomers Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, alongside John Lithgow as Dumbledore and Nick Frost as Hagrid.

Season 1 of the series adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and is set to premiere on December 25, 2026, on HBO Max, with Season 2 production scheduled to begin this fall.
