Actor Kit Harington has officially joined the cast of HBO's Harry Potter Season 2 as Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Gilderoy Lockhart. He replaces Nicholas Hoult, who exited the project due to scheduling conflicts after production timelines shifted.

The recast occurred when HBO could not accommodate Hoult's two pre-existing projects following changes to the filming schedule. Executive producers turned to the former Game of Thrones star, who previously voiced Lockhart in Audible's Full-Cast Audio Editions of the book series.

Harington expressed enthusiasm for joining the live-action production, expanding on his previous involvement with the fantasy franchise.

"I read it, and like so many generations, I was entranced, and then I was a huge fan all through my teenage years," Harington said to Audible in a statement shared by Deadline.

The actor also reflected on the universal appeal of the character he will be portraying on screen.

"I think there’s a little bit of Gilderoy Lockhart in all of us," Harington added.

The character was originally portrayed on screen by Kenneth Branagh in the 2002 film adaptation Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Harington's prior screen credits include Marvel's Eternals, Industry, and Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
