Gamescom 2026 Opens in Cologne with Record 1,600 Exhibitors
Gamescom 2026 opens on Wednesday in Cologne, Germany, featuring a record-breaking roster of more than 1,600 exhibitors. Organizer Koelnmesse confirmed that two-thirds of the participating development teams and publishers are arriving from outside host nation Germany.
The five-day event kicks off with its traditional showcase, Opening Night Live, hosted by industry personality Geoff Keighley on Tuesday, August 25, at 8 p.m. CEST. Organizers confirmed the presentation will broadcast globally on official Gamescom streaming channels from the trade fair grounds in Cologne.
Geoff Keighley revealed eight major titles scheduled for the showcase, including The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past DLC, Final Fantasy VII Revelation, Gears of War: E-Day, Metro 2039, Tides of Annihilation, Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, and a playable demo for Ananta. Publisher Konami is also slated to present Silent Hill: Townfall during the broadcast.
Addressing the selection process and commercial nature of the show, Keighley detailed how titles secure placement during a press briefing.
"Just as companies rent a booth at Gamescom and buy space, they also secure space within the show," said Geoff Keighley, Host and Producer of Opening Night Live.
While commercial slot bookings take place, editorial selections remain reserved for standout projects regardless of budget size.
"I think it's important to all of us that there are games selected for the show based on their editorial value. We also include many independent games. You'll see a lot of small teams, games developed by three or four people, that make it into ONL because we believe in those titles and teams and want to support them," said Keighley.
He characterized the overall showcase structure as a hybrid model integrated with physical convention attendance.
"These shows are marketing events, just like Gamescom is a marketing event. But there are definitely games that appear in the shows for editorial reasons," said Keighley.
The selection mechanism operates through internal panel reviews linked directly to exhibition floor presence.
"The companies we work with are already present as exhibitors at Gamescom in some form, and this is perhaps a digital extension of what they are doing with their booths," said Keighley.
He noted that new updates dictate whether a title lands an unpaid editorial slot.
"Everyone wants to be surprised with something completely new and exciting. Companies and partners often earn the opportunity for editorial placements through the type of news they bring," said Keighley.
Existing games receive alternative placement during the broadcast.
"That is more like advertising for an already existing game," said Keighley.
The physical exhibition features global representation alongside regional delegations, including 25 development studios and startups from Saxony presenting under a joint booth managed by Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH.
"Saxony is consistently developing into a one-stop shop for games and applied interactive technologies, offering studios and publishers the right partners to develop, finance, network, and grow," according to Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH.
Regional leadership highlighted the economic overlap between digital entertainment and broader industrial technology sectors.
"The games sector and interactive technologies belong to the growth-intensive sectors of the software and creative industries. Together with its universities, Saxony offers excellent conditions to establish itself as an innovative location," said Thomas Horn, Managing Director of Wirtschaftsförderung Sachsen GmbH.
The convention is also hosting Games Done Quick to collect charitable donations for the Gaming for Democracy initiative.
"With this, we are once again using Gamescom as a platform for a good cause, and that is very important to us," said Tim Endres, Director of Gamescom at Koelnmesse.
Attendees can play showcased titles, including Metro 2039, directly on the exhibition floor throughout the remainder of the week.
