On August 25, Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 showcased major industry reveals, highlighted by a remastered version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and new footage of Final Fantasy 7: Revelation. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the event featured a strong presence from international studios despite ongoing global hardware challenges. CD Projekt Red closed the presentation by announcing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, launching on September 29.

The update offers visual improvements and a redesigned skill tree, arriving as a free upgrade for current owners across PC and consoles, including the Nintendo Switch 2.

The remaster bundles the first two expansions for free, while teasing a brand-new third expansion titled Songs of the Past slated for 2027. Level design lead Miles Tost took the stage to discuss the development team's desire to continue the franchise's narrative.

"one more story," said Tost. The event opened with a speech from Keighley acknowledging recent hardware price increases and widespread studio layoffs.

"it's no secret that the video game industry is changing and evolving," said Keighley. He emphasized the resilience of creators worldwide who continue to produce new experiences during difficult economic times. "But in spite of all that, developers around the world are pushing forward to build new games," said Keighley.

Ukraine-based 4A Games presented a gritty gameplay trailer for Metro 2039, scheduled for a February 2027 release on PC and current-generation consoles.

Jon Bloch introduced the dark post-apocalyptic shooter, noting the difficult circumstances their team faced during production. "Creating a game this dark requires a lot of passion, discipline, and a development team that has become accustomed to working without peace or regularity," said Bloch. His colleague Pavel Ulmer shed light on the harsh realities of game development in a conflict zone.

"pretty rough, trust me," said Ulmer.

The pre-show also brought announcements like Amplitude Studios' Humankind 2, arriving in 2027. Studio head Romain de Waubert de Genlis previously noted the strong performance of the franchise's first installment.

"most successful game ever both financially and in number of players," said de Waubert de Genlis. Other notable highlights included Final Fantasy 7: Revelation launching simultaneously on all platforms in spring 2027, shifting away from timed exclusivity.

HoYoverse's cooperative action title Nodusfall opened the showcase, signaling a prominent showing for Asian developers. Microsoft confirmed Gears of War: E-Day will arrive on October 6, while Hitman: World of Assassination launched a Snoop Dogg crossover.
