Giants starter Carson Whisenhunt exits vs Reds with elbow pain

Carson Whisenhunt left the game for the San Francisco Giants against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday at Oracle Park with left elbow pain, after throwing his 47th pitch in the third inning with two outs.

With Whisenhunt facing Reds center fielder Dane Myers, he winced, held his left arm straight as he walked back to the mound, and then exited after trainer Dave Groeschner visited.

Jason Foley replaced Whisenhunt and struck out Myers on four pitches to end the third inning, then pitched a scoreless fourth as the Giants maintained a 5-0 lead after two innings.

San Francisco produced runs early, with Jung Hoo Lee and Turner Hill each collecting an RBI in the first inning, and Rafael Devers hitting a three-run home run in the bottom of the second.

Whisenhunt was making his eighth start of the season and his sixth straight since his most recent recall on July 26, and he had allowed 22 runs (21 earned) on 30 hits in 21.1 innings for an 8.86 ERA, according to SF Giants reporting.

Earlier in August, the Giants noted Whisenhunt’s performance on Aug. 11, when he allowed one earned run in 5 2/3 innings as San Francisco beat the Houston Astros 4-1.

The Giants also announced additional roster changes earlier Monday, adding shortstop Willy Adames, outfielder Victor Bericoto, and right-hander JT Brubaker to the injured list, while promoting five other players from Triple-A Sacramento.

Other Giants pitchers on the injured list include Matt Gage with left elbow strain, Trevor McDonald with right elbow strain, and Keaton Winn with right elbow neuritis, as the team awaited further updates.
