Giants Recall Shay Whitcomb From Triple A Sacramento

The San Francisco Giants recalled third baseman Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sacramento ahead of Monday's game against the Cincinnati Reds, assigning him the start at the hot corner and batting seventh, according to San Francisco Chronicle reporter Shayna Rubin.

Whitcomb was claimed by the Giants earlier in August after being designated for assignment by the Houston Astros, and the move gave him his first major league opportunity with the new club, as reported by CBS Sports.

Giants manager Tony Vitello said he received positive evaluations from the staff who worked with Whitcomb in Triple-A, including coaches at Sacramento.

"I received good reviews from everyone who went through him," Vitello said.

Vitello added that he valued Whitcomb's approach at the plate and described his swing as efficient against pitching, highlighting how the plan fits when facing difficult arms.

"The most important thing everyone says is that I like his match-yogging. I also like the simple swing. It's very efficient.

There is no unnecessary action to be corrected. When facing a tricky pitcher like today, efficient swing is a strength," Vitello said.

According to mk.co.kr, Whitcomb has played in eight Triple-A games since the waivers claim, going 8 for 31 with a .258 batting average.

The Giants also announced broader roster changes for the Reds series, including placing Willy Adames on the injured list with a left elbow sprain, JT Brubaker on the injured list with bruised ribs, and Victor Bericoto on the injured list with a right knee issue, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

To create roster spots, San Francisco recalled Nate Furman, Grant McCray, Anthony Molina, Ryan Walker, and Shay Whitcomb from Triple-A Sacramento, MLB Trade Rumors reported.

MLB Trade Rumors also said Whitcomb will get the start against Cincinnati ace Chase Burns, while McCray is set to play right field and Jung Hoo Lee will work as the designated hitter in that matchup.
