US Voters Favor Democrats on Cost of Living Ahead of Midterms

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll reveals that US voters favor the Democratic Party over Republicans regarding the cost of living, with Democrats leading by 8 points, signaling challenges for President Donald Trump's party ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The online survey, conducted over four days and completed on August 24, 2026, asked 951 registered voters which party had a better plan for managing the cost of living. Thirty-six percent chose Democrats, 28% Republicans, while the remaining respondents were unsure or found neither party suitable.

This 8-point advantage is the largest Democratic lead on this issue since the question was first asked in October 2025, a shift that began after the US engagement in the Iran conflict earlier this year contributed to near-record gasoline prices.

Republican political consultant Jeanette Hoffman expressed concern about the GOP's position on this critical issue.

"I don't think it's great for Republicans," Hoffman said.

However, she noted that Democrats should not be overly confident given that 37% of respondents were uncertain or dissatisfied with both parties' approaches.

"I would rather be eight points ahead on the issue versus eight points down. But I don't think Democrats should be feeling great about it either," Hoffman said.

Cost of living has been the most important voting issue throughout the year, especially with all 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats up for election this November.

Democratic candidates are emphasizing affordability in their campaigns. Texas Democrat James Talarico, running for the US Senate, has used advertisements showing grocery bags to illustrate the burden of rising prices on Texans. His race is considered competitive in a traditionally Republican state.

Republicans retain strengths on other issues such as immigration and crime.

Hoffman advised Republican candidates to highlight their efforts on affordability, including tax cuts, while warning voters about the growing influence of democratic socialists within the Democratic Party.

Democrats have proposed raising the federal minimum wage and expanding Medicare coverage to all Americans, initiatives supported by democratic socialists.

The ongoing Iran conflict, while less intense now, continues to impact oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, keeping global prices high and affecting US household expenses. President Trump recently confirmed no peace talks are scheduled.

Republican strategist Christopher Nicholas criticized the Trump administration's efforts on the cost of living issue.

"This is an easy layup for the party out of power, which are the Democrats," Nicholas said.

He acknowledged some steps like lowering prescription drug prices but said healthcare costs still rise faster than inflation, and voters feel the pressure of gas and food prices weekly.

President Trump's approval rating on handling the cost of living stands at 50% among Republicans, lower than his overall approval of about 80% within his party.

Earlier this month, a Reuters/Ipsos poll found Democrats favored over Republicans as better economic stewards for the first time in a decade, with a 2-point lead.

The most recent poll included responses from 1,215 US adults nationwide, including the 951 registered voters, and has a margin of error of three percentage points.
