Usha Vance Responds to Abdul El Sayed Comments on Family

Second Lady Usha Vance responded to remarks made by Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed regarding her Indian heritage and her husband's family background during an interview on Fox & Friends.

The exchange followed criticisms from Vice President JD Vance regarding El-Sayed's views on Sharia law during a campaign stop in Ohio. El-Sayed countered on Saturday with a social media post targeting Usha Vance's heritage and referencing the vice president's late grandfather, James Vance.

Addressing the online commentary during her television appearance, Vance shared her initial reaction to the candidate's post.

"I have to admit I kind of laughed," said Usha Vance, Second Lady of the United States.

Although she never met her husband's grandparents directly, Vance highlighted the strong relationship she maintains with his extended family, including his mother, aunt, and uncle.

"I do know and love the children that they raised: his mom, his aunt and uncle. And they have never been anything but incredibly loving. His aunt is like a second mother to me," said Vance.

She further reflected on the character of the late grandparents based on her experiences with their surviving family members.

"I have to think that, if they raised children like that, they would've been loving as well and I would have really, really, really loved to have met them," added Vance.

The couple originally met at Yale Law School in 2010, years after JD Vance's grandparents had passed away. During his recent speech in Ohio, Vice President Vance noted that his grandfather worked as a welder for 40 years and traditionally supported Democratic candidates to protect union labor interests.
