US Issues Security Alert for Mexicali Over Potential Threat

U.S. government operations and official travel to Mexicali were suspended on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after the U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued a security alert warning citizens of a potential security threat in the border city.

The U.S. Consulate in Tijuana advised American citizens to avoid government buildings in Mexicali, seek shelter if an incident occurs, update family on their safety status, follow Mexican law enforcement directions, monitor local media, and remain aware of their surroundings.

State and federal security forces in Baja California immediately launched special patrol operations across Mexicali to preserve order, following security directives from Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda.

General Laureano Carrillo, Secretary of Citizen Security and coordinator of the Security Table for the Construction of Peace, stated that inter-agency coordination remains fully active throughout the municipality.

"By direct order of Governor Marina del Pilar, state and federal forces act in a coordinated manner to safeguard order and tranquility in the state capital," said Laureano Carrillo, Secretary of Citizen Security.

The security deployment involves joint participation from the Secretariat of National Defense, the Navy, the National Guard, the Federal SSPC, the State Force of Citizen Security, the FGR, the FGE, the National Intelligence Center, and the Municipal Police.

"The prevention, patrolling, and surveillance operations remain fully active as part of our inescapable commitment to the protection of the people of Baja California," said Laureano Carrillo, Secretary of Citizen Security.

State officials reminded residents that the emergency hotline 911 and the anonymous tip line 089 remain operational 24 hours a day to handle public safety concerns.
