US Advisory Follows 120-Kg Fentanyl Raid in Mexicali

A U.S. travel restriction for government personnel in Mexicali coincides with heightened security measures in Baja California, following a major joint drug bust targeting local cartel operatives five days earlier.

Federal American officials issued a security warning suspending official travel and operations in the border capital on August 25, 2026, due to unconfirmed threat intelligence. The diplomatic alert did not specify the target, location, or origin of the potential security risk, prompting immediate precautions across federal and state agencies.

The security advisory follows a major law enforcement raid in Mexicali executed by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration alongside three tiers of Mexican security forces. The joint operation targeted a safehouse linked to Los Rusos, identified as the armed wing of the La Mayiza faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. Authorities seized 120 kilograms of fentanyl—amounting to over four million individual doses—alongside firearms and vehicles, though U.S. officials have not explicitly connected the alert to the seizure.

Baja California state leadership confirmed that security operations would intensify across Mexicali while maintaining routine protection measures. Governor Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda stated through official channels that state and federal forces remain deployed across the city in a coordinated effort to ensure public order.

State authorities affirmed that multi-agency protocols remain active to prevent and contain potential security contingencies.

"On direct instructions from Governor Marina del Pilar, state and federal forces are acting in a coordinated manner to safeguard order and tranquility in the state capital. Prevention, patrolling, and surveillance operations remain fully active as part of an undeniable commitment to protecting the people of Baja California," said Gen. Laureano Carrillo, Secretary of Citizen Security.

The defensive deployment involves the Mexican Army, Navy, National Guard, Federal Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection, State Preventive Police, Federal Attorney General's Office, State Attorney General's Office, National Intelligence Center, and Municipal Police. Official statements did not clarify whether the increased readiness directly stems from retaliatory threats following the recent drug seizure.
