Trump ICE Nominee Faces Resistance Internal DHS Officials

Department of Homeland Security officials are openly questioning President Donald Trump's choice of former Oklahoma state trooper Lance Schroyer to lead Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Internal critics argue Schroyer lacks the necessary federal background for the post, according to reports from Politico.

Schroyer's Senate confirmation hearing remains stalled after Republican Senator Rand Paul placed a hold on the proceedings. Paul requested more information regarding federal investigations into the fatal shootings of two American citizens by ICE agents in Minneapolis earlier this year.

Multiple agency insiders prefer that acting ICE director Dave Venturella remain in charge permanently. White House border czar Tom Homan and other key administration figures were reportedly caught off guard when Trump announced the nomination in June.

Opposition within the department centers on Schroyer's limited experience with large-scale immigration enforcement operations.

"We don't want [Schroyer]. We don't need him. Leave us alone.

We are running better than ever," one official told Politico. "People need to stop telling us how to do what we do best."

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin selected Schroyer, a longtime associate, for the role. Insiders contend this choice signals a lack of focus on the administration's core policy objectives.

"That's not even JV level for literally the most important job in the admin that remains unfilled," a second official told Politico. "Mullin clearly doesn't subscribe to mass deportations."

Critics outside the department also noted the mismatch in qualifications given the agency's primary mandate.

"If the whole point was to have someone with no immigration enforcement background either ideologically, politically or operationally as secretary, then it's kind of odd to have a similar person as the head of ICE, as opposed to somebody with familiarity or activism on the issue," Mike Howell, president of The Oversight Project, told Politico.

Agency personnel believe the White House is not pushing aggressively to clear the Senate hold, leaving the nomination in limbo.

"I don't get a sense that this nomination is going anywhere," an official admitted to Politico on the condition of anonymity.

The administration continues to publicly back the nomination despite internal pushback and the stalled confirmation process.

"Secretary Mullin and the Department of Homeland Security stand firmly behind President Trump's nominee, Lance Schroyer, and look forward to him bringing nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience to lead the men and women of ICE," a department spokesperson said.

White House officials indicated that the Senate timeline does not reflect a change in executive intent.

"Lance Schroyer remains President Trump's nominee to lead ICE. Congressional scheduling should not be interpreted as any personnel announcements," a White House official told Politico.

"People can have personal relationships with Dave [Venturella] or whoever, but ultimately, it's who the president wants in that position."

No Senate-confirmed director has led ICE since 2014, leaving the agency under acting leadership for the past 12 years.
