TRI Operates Direct Trains Between Düsseldorf Airport and Gamescom
Rail operator TRI Rental Train GmbH will provide direct special train service connecting Düsseldorf Airport's underground terminal station to Gamescom in Cologne from Wednesday, August 26, to Sunday, August 30, 2026, bypassing ongoing regional track closures.
According to schedule data published by Deutsche Bahn, the temporary service bypasses the usual regional train station, sending rail cars directly onto S-Bahn tracks underneath the airport terminal to alleviate heavy regional transit congestion.
A major route closure between Düsseldorf and Cologne via Mülheim has disrupted the regional network, forcing regional trains to divert through Neuss and extending transit times between Düsseldorf Airport and Cologne to over an hour.
To support influxes of trade fair visitors, TRI will run three daily trains departing Cologne Messe/Deutz for the airport at 5:26 p.m., 5:54 p.m., and 8:15 p.m., stopping only at Cologne Main Station and Düsseldorf Main Station with an estimated transit time of one hour.
The final daily airport-bound train will utilize a rarely used connecting curve to continue further toward Essen, offering direct access for travelers traveling to and from the Ruhr region.
Return services from Düsseldorf Airport back to Cologne are scheduled twice daily at 6:35 p.m. and 7:19 p.m., operating via Düsseldorf Main Station and Solingen.
Deutsche Bahn schedule information indicates these short-notice special connections are omitted from the official Gamescom travel flyer, which primarily directs travelers toward replacement bus services.
