Tim Curry Dies at 80 Following Years of Health Struggles

Actor Tim Curry, renowned for his iconic performances in cult classics like "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and "Clue," died on August 25 at the age of 80 following years of health struggles.

Curry's death was confirmed after years of medical issues, including a stroke he suffered in 2012. Venues and long-time fans around the country immediately moved to pay tribute to the late performer's decades-long career on screen and stage.

The Clinton Street Theater in Southeast Portland announced an impromptu, free public memorial for Wednesday night. The theater has screened "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" every Saturday night since 1978, maintaining the tradition through the pandemic to mostly empty rooms.

Theater officials praised Curry's transformative body of work and his lasting cultural impact following news of his passing.

"Tim Curry was so much more than an actor to us. He was bigger than the big screen. Outside his role as Dr.

Frank-N-Furter, he turned so many roles into iconic performances. But it was Frank who captured our hearts. The Rocky Horror Picture Show simply would not be the cult classic it is without Tim Curry," representatives for the Clinton Street Theater said.

The theater emphasized that his performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter remains a foundational inspiration for generations of moviegoers.

"His earnest dedication to the character is what keeps connecting with people all over the world today and what keeps us playing the film every Saturday since 1978. The unabashed, brilliant beauty of Tim Curry as Dr. Frank-N-Furter should be a reminder to us all: Don't dream it, be it," representatives for the Clinton Street Theater said.

Beyond his defining theatrical turn in 1975, Curry built a massive fan base through diverse roles, including Wadsworth the butler in the 1985 comedy whodunit "Clue," Pennywise in the 1990 "It" miniseries, and appearances in "Muppet Treasure Island" and "Home Alone 2."

During a prior Zoom interview regarding the 40th anniversary of "Clue" and his 2025 memoir "Vagabond," Curry recalled filming an unreleased alternate ending for the ensemble comedy film.

"I killed everybody," Tim Curry said.

Organizers at the Clinton Street Theater requested that attendees at the Wednesday memorial clear out by 10 p.m. so staff could close the building, thanking visitors in advance for showing respect.
