Shelley Fabares, a beloved television actress known for her roles on "The Donna Reed Show" and "Coach," died at age 82 on Saturday in Los Angeles, according to her family.

Born in Santa Monica in 1944, Fabares began acting at age 3 and quickly became a household name by playing Mary Stone on "The Donna Reed Show" from 1958 to 1963. She also gained fame as a singer with two Top 40 hits, including the No. 1 song "Johnny Angel."

Fabares appeared in three Elvis Presley films during the early 1960s: "Girl Happy," "Spinout," and "Clambake." Later, she starred as Francine Webster on the sitcom "One Day at a Time" in the 1970s and earned Emmy nominations for her role as Christine Armstrong on "Coach," which ran for nine seasons.

Her family said, "To her family and friends, Shelley was a source of love, strength, laughter, and comfort. She had a remarkable ability to make people feel welcomed, valued, and cared for." No cause of death was disclosed.

In a 1993 interview, Fabares praised the influence of Donna Reed, her on-screen mother, saying, "Donna Reed was simply an extraordinary woman, a woman of great strength, kindness, integrity and compassion. I carry her with me today."

Fabares was married twice, first to producer Lou Adler in 1964 and later to "M*A*S*H" actor Mike Farrell in 1984. The couple was devoted to caring for Fabares' mother, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease, a cause Fabares advocated for during her later years.

After facing progressive liver failure in 1999, Fabares underwent a liver transplant in 2000. She credited her husband Farrell for his unwavering support during her recovery, saying she was "changed by the experience" and eternally grateful to him.

Her family remembered her as "kind, loyal, witty, courageous, and beautiful," emphasizing her impact as both a celebrated performer and a loving person in everyday life.
