NYPD Investigates Video of Group Emerging From Manhattan Manhole

The New York Police Department is investigating a social media video showing three individuals climbing out of a Manhattan manhole near Penn Station around 4 a.m. Tuesday. The group, wearing overalls and headlamps, quickly ran away after emerging at 32nd Street and Seventh Avenue.

City officials said an inspection of the underground network conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection revealed no structural damage to the system. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that no arrests have been made as the inquiry continues.

"There are no arrests and the investigation is ongoing," police said.

Environmental officials warned that trespassing into the municipal drainage network carries severe physical risks alongside legal consequences.

"Sewers can contain numerous hazards, including noxious and potentially deadly gases, unstable surfaces, flooding risks, and confined spaces," the statement said. "For these reasons, members of the public should never enter a pipe, drain, catch basin, manhole, or outfall."

The agency previously emphasized the safety hazards inherent to the city's vast infrastructure network.

The Manhattan incident follows similar underground sightings reported in Brooklyn earlier this summer. In one May occurrence, seven individuals emerged from a sewer on Bedford Avenue carrying shovels, while another group exited a manhole before departing in a vehicle.

Investigators previously suspected the trespassers were searching for lost valuables beneath the city streets. Following those incidents, police deployed specialized units to sweep the subterranean passages.

"The NYPD, to make sure there was not a threat to the public, sent their highly trained Emergency Services Unit officers into the sewer system to make sure nothing nefarious had been left behind by the individuals — nothing was found," police said in June.

Authorities have not determined whether the recent Manhattan event is connected to the earlier Brooklyn sightings.
