Molly McNearney Discusses Jimmy Kimmel Late-Night Future and Marriage

Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel and his wife, executive producer Molly McNearney, addressed the origins of their workplace relationship and the ongoing pressures of late-night television during an appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast on Monday, August 24, 2026.

McNearney detailed how their romance began years after she joined the staff of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, noting that she initial hesitated to date her boss due to workplace dynamics before the couple eventually married in 2013.

"I met him a couple weeks into working at the show," McNearney said. "I went into the office with the executive producer at the time. … I don’t think Jimmy even looked up from his desk [when I was introduced to him]."

She recalled that six months after she listed her favorite meals during a staff meeting, Kimmel invited her over to his home and prepared those exact dishes.

"Talk about a long play," McNearney said. "I go to Jimmy’s house, he asks me to come over after work … and he opens up the door, and it smells delicious, and he’s like, ‘I made some things,’ and it was pizza and gnocchi, crab claws, chocolate chop cookies and BLT."

Podcast host Dax Shepard inquired if she recognized the gesture as romantic intent.

"Yes! It made me very excited and very nervous. I remember thinking, ‘Oh, no.

This is a bad idea.’ He was my boss," McNearney said.

Kimmel offered his perspective on the encounter.

"didn’t have that thought at the time," Kimmel said.

McNearney pushed back on his statement, highlighting the workplace power differential.

"The person in power usually doesn’t, but I was very nervous about it. I thought it was a terrible idea. … I was very skittish," McNearney said. "I just kept thinking statistically this is not going to work out and your life isn’t going to change, but mine does.

And that’s what freaked me out. Because I had worked really, really hard."

She added that the pair kept their relationship hidden before going public in 2009.

"The first few months, we were very very quiet," McNearney said. "I was very nervous about it changing the work dynamic, and I was in a room of mostly men, and we had a great thing going on … and I didn’t want it to change."

Following the podcast release, reality television personality Spencer Pratt criticized the host on social media on Monday, August 24, 2026.

"Isn’t this what Harvey Weinstein did?" Pratt wrote.

The discussion on Armchair Expert also turned to the toll of political tensions and ABC's temporary suspension of the show in September 2025 after Kimmel made comments regarding conservative activist Charlie Kirk, as well as subsequent calls by President Donald Trump for his termination.

"We had to explain what was going on because there were helicopters and noise outside her house and also they were still in school and this was becoming a very huge story," McNearney said. "We didn’t know how big it would be, and we didn’t know if the kids were going to hear about it at school."

She explained her daughter's reaction to the news suspension.

"So we said, ‘The show has been canceled for a little bit.’ And Jane said, ‘Is this Donald Trump’s fault?’ And we said yes," McNearney said.

Shepard noted the unusual situation facing the family.

"When you’re evaluating all the weird ways our kids are growing up, that’s incredibly bizarre," Shepard said.

McNearney reflected on the situation's unique impact on her children.

"I said to Jim the other day, ‘What a wild childhood for these kids is—to know that the president of the United States doesn’t like their father.’ I mean, that’s not a great feeling, but it’s also kind of funny," McNearney said.

Kimmel compared the situation to familiar screen archetypes.

"I don’t know if they understand that he’s not like a movie villain or a TV villain. In a way, he is. He’s like a cartoon character.

They’re probably having a hard time taking him seriously," Kimmel said. "Their president is interchangeable with Dr. Evil or something."

McNearney weighed the prospect of her husband eventually stepping away from late-night television.

"It definitely appeals to me for the nervous system of the household," McNearney said. "I feel like Jimmy has a fly rod in one hand and a torch in the other right now. It's like he deserves to go out there and just be on the river and relax, but I also want him to keep fighting. And I feel this sense of desire to not quit because I think what he’s doing is incredibly important right now."

She noted the audience connection maintained by the broadcast.

"Yes, I know we're doing it in a vacuum, but I think it’s giving people a feeling of like, their voice is heard, and I think it's important," McNearney said. "But as his wife, I really would like him to be able to not do the show anymore so he could relax."

Regarding her own career trajectory, McNearney stated she remains open to future opportunities.

"I would be happy to be done with the show, end it in a great way and do my own next thing," McNearney said. "But I do care deeply about that show and the people who work there. And I think the voice is really important right now."

Kimmel addressed the uncertainty surrounding the show's eventual conclusion, citing recent shifts in the late-night landscape, including the May 2026 departure of Stephen Colbert from CBS.

"I know people who've been in that situation," Kimmel said. "It's funny, people make a big show of like, 'I'm done and I'm tired doing this.' And then they make a lesser comeback trying to do the same thing.

That's always a bummer. And I always look at that and go, 'Oh, is that going to be me?'"

Kimmel previously stated in June that he had considered stepping down during Joe Biden's presidency.

"Six years ago, I told them I thought I was done when [Joe] Biden was president," Kimmel said.

He acknowledged feeling affected by recent network changes within late-night television.

"I feel a little bit defeated by it," Kimmel said. "In a lot of ways, I feel like I’m looking at my own future."
