Stockard Channing Reveals Reclusive Life and Rare Grease Views

Actress Stockard Channing revealed she has watched her iconic 1978 film Grease only twice, as the 82-year-old star reflected on her decision to embrace a quiet, reclusive life in London during a rare interview with BBC Scotland.

Channing, who earned widespread acclaim playing Rizzo in the classic musical alongside Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, expressed admiration for the enduring movie despite rarely watching it herself.

"I've only seen it twice. The first time it was out, and 20 years later," said Channing, actress.

"I admire the film because I think it was so beautifully made. It looks extraordinary; it's really well crafted… It became such a big part of my life and other people's lives.

The veteran performer shifted her life across the Atlantic to Maine in 2019 following the 2014 death of her long-time partner, producer Dan Gillham, before eventually settling in London. Speaking about her move, Channing noted that the loss impacted her deeply over time.

"I'm happy being a recluse," said Channing, actress.

"Children were thought about and, yeah, I think about them now because it'd be great to have someone taking care of me. But hey, children can be just as selfish as everybody else out there."

Political changes in the United States also played a role in her choice to relocate abroad, with the transition coinciding with Donald Trump's presidency. The star, who famously portrayed First Lady Dr. Abbey Bartlet on NBC's hit series The West Wing, addressed public nostalgia for principled leadership.

'People look at The West Wing and go, " Wow, wasn't it great when politicians had an ounce of integrity?"' said Channing, actress.

Despite enjoying a quieter routine, Channing continues to take on new creative ventures. She is currently making her directorial debut with Krapp's Last Tape at the Edinburgh Festival and will participate in events for the upcoming release of Practical Magic 2, where she reprises her role as Aunt Frances Owens alongside Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman.
