John-Paul Miller Faces Charges After Wife Mica Miller's Death in South Carolina

John-Paul Miller faces federal charges related to the death of his wife, Mica Miller, found dead in a North Carolina state park in April 2024, after a turbulent marriage marked by allegations of coercive control and abuse, according to reports and a recent Netflix documentary.

Mica Miller, 30, was discovered with a gunshot wound to her head, and her death was ruled a suicide. The couple had ties to the Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where John-Paul was the pastor and Mica served as the worship leader and creative director.

Their marriage, which began after a scandalous affair in 2015, was reportedly troubled with multiple divorce filings and legal separations. Mica had filed for divorce in October 2023 but later dismissed it, and John-Paul filed for separation shortly after, which was also dismissed. Police reports show Mica expressed fears for her life, citing incidents of tire slashing and feeling followed.

John-Paul Miller has been charged with cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators, as described in the Netflix series Death of the Pastor's Wife, co-directed by Mike Gasparro and Julia Willoughby Nason. The series draws on police reports, medical records, Mica’s journals, and testimonies from family and friends to explore the abusive dynamics behind the marriage.

According to the documentary and family statements, John-Paul began an affair with Mica when she was 20 and he was 35, years after she had been his nanny as a teenager. His significant spiritual authority over Mica, who grew up in the church and admired him, created a power imbalance that influenced their relationship's development.

Mica’s sister Sierra Francis alleged John-Paul groomed Mica from a young age and exerted controlling behavior throughout their marriage. Sierra stated, "I know my sister to have expressed the abuse and violence against her by her husband to others, including family members and members of the church congregation." Mica had also sought a restraining order against John-Paul in the weeks before her death.

John-Paul defended their marriage publicly, describing it as strong and affirming. "We were good for each other. She was incredibly affirming. She was a great pastor’s wife," he said in an interview, denying allegations of abuse.
