Florida Names Aaron Philo Starting Quarterback for Opener

Florida Gators head coach Jon Sumrall named Georgia Tech transfer Aaron Philo as the team's starting quarterback on August 24, 2026, ahead of the regular season opener against Florida Atlantic on September 5.

Philo earned the top spot following the Gators' second fall scrimmage, securing the starting job over redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. after a competitive spring and fall camp battle. The decision allows Philo to take the primary first-team reps as Florida transitions into game preparation.

The redshirt sophomore quarterback spent last season at Georgia Tech backing up Haynes King before entering the transfer portal. During his eight career appearances with the Yellow Jackets, Philo completed 59 of 102 passes for 938 yards, throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Philo re-joins former Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who now leads Florida's offense under Sumrall. The scheme favors a quick passer with the mobility to punish creeping defenses and create explosive downfield plays.

Sumrall explained the decision on Monday while detailing the operational control Philo demonstrated during scrimmage play.

"We are preparing for him to be the starter for Week 1," said Jon Sumrall, Florida head coach.

The coaching staff evaluated film over the weekend before finalizing the depth chart adjustment.

"There will not be some crazy hoopla around it in our building, it's just how we're moving forward," said Sumrall. "I met with both guys and both are awesome. I'm excited about the room.

The good news is both of them have elevated their play. Love both of them and I'm fired up for both of them."

Both signal-callers pushed each other throughout camp before the staff separated the two on film evaluation.

"It's been a real battle, it's not been some empty competition. It's been real and that's where we are," said Sumrall.

Philo demonstrated advanced pre-snap processing and defense pre-reads during team drills.

"He has operated at the line of scrimmage at a touch higher level," said Sumrall. "There's no surprise in the spring because he'd been in the system and Tramell had not. We're able to operate the full offense at a little bit higher level with Aaron, with the whole level.

Their arm talent is very similar. What's unique is both of them's play style resembles each other more than it differentiates."

Sumrall added that Philo demonstrated better vision across the middle of the field.

"I talked to Aaron this is not an anointing," said Sumrall. "(This) is not some permanent, you're the starter forever. For Tramell, it's not like you're being relegated or demoted and forgotten.

This is not fatal. I'm a believer in Tramell Jones. I just feel like right now it's where we need to go with the decision, but the guys will rally around both."

Jones originally committed to Florida in the 2025 recruiting class and remained with the program through the head coaching transition. Jones made two appearances in 2025, recording 191 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Florida opens the season against Florida Atlantic and Campbell before kicking off SEC competition on September 19 against Auburn. The Gators face five opponents ranked in the preseason AP Top 25, including four teams featured in the top 10.
