Dark Matter Returns for Season Two as Sci Fi Hits Stream Free

Streaming platform Apple TV will premiere the second season of its hit science fiction thriller series Dark Matter on Friday, August 28, 2026, while author Blake Crouch expands the story beyond his original 2016 novel.

The 10-episode second season launches with a single episode, followed by weekly releases every Friday until the season finale on October 30, 2026. Subscriptions for Apple TV cost $12.99 per month following a seven-day free trial.

Led by Joel Edgerton and Jennifer Connelly, the series has surged to the No. 8 spot among the most-watched titles globally on Apple TV as fans revisit the first season. Crouch continues as creator, showrunner, and writer alongside Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry.

The core narrative follows physicist Jason Dessen, played by Edgerton, who is abducted into an alternate version of his life. The new season picks up as his family settles into a new world before new forces compel them to flee, while actor Chris Diamantopoulos joins the cast in a recurring role and Amanda Brugel expands her role as a series regular.

Connelly, who also serves as an executive producer alongside Edgerton, noted that her executive producer role allows her to participate in conceptual conversations regarding character plots and the central marital relationship.

"To be honest, I don't feel like I can't relate to people in a normal way. Sometimes I see that people have prejudices, as if I have to be a certain way or have certain characteristics, but we do that to each other for different reasons. I don't think I am famous in the sense of not being able to do what I normally do with my family, with my children, with my friends... There is something special about people who just continue with their lives," said Connelly regarding her experience with fame while discussing her character Daniela.

The actress compared her level of public visibility to other high-profile Hollywood stars while reflecting on her daily life.

"I mean, there are people for whom it's different. I've seen it when I've been with Tom Cruise. There are people so famous that it's undeniable, but I'm not famous. I can walk down the street," said Connelly.

Addressing the abstract themes of quantum superposition and identity present in the series, Connelly explained her practical approach during filming.

"It's funny because when filming the series, I didn't think about those things at all. You can't interpret those more abstract concepts there. I think: 'Where is Daniela?

What is she doing in this scene? What is my goal? What am I afraid of?

What am I trying to get from the person I'm talking to?' I focus on specific things, but when talking about this project, watching it, and reflecting, all those questions arise. All those elements are what make this series fun.

It's the construction of an amazing world and the imagination behind it, but also those provocative concepts of identity, commitment, choice, and memory," said Connelly.

She also reflected on how personal choice shapes the central relationships within a complex multiverse setting.

"I think there is something romantic in that idea, although it may seem unromantic, of choice and commitment. There is something beautiful in saying 'this is the path I have chosen and my journey is not about looking for something different, easier, or better, I have chosen this person, this path, and I have committed'. There is something beautiful in recognizing that happiness comes from within, from ourselves and what we do with what we have," said Connelly.

Alongside Connelly's current work, her 1998 cult classic sci-fi film Dark City, directed by Alex Proyas and co-starring Rufus Sewell and Kiefer Sutherland, has become available for free streaming on Tubi, Plex, and Sling TV.

Actor Kiefer Sutherland, who plays Dr. Daniel P. Schreber in the 1998 film, reflected on the creative impact of the production.

"Dark City will always hold a special place in my heart because I believe that, creatively, it approaches what I consider to be cinema, which is the highest art form of filmmaking, and that was because Alex did that with it," said Sutherland.

Dark Matter Season 2 joins Apple TV's fall streaming lineup, with all nine episodes of Season 1 currently available on the platform.
