San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey returned to training camp practice on Sunday, August 23, 2026, in Santa Clara after missing two weeks due to muscle tightness.

The All-Pro tailback participated in team drills for the first time since Aug. 8. McCaffrey clarified that his absence was a planned workload management strategy rather than a contract dispute or major injury setup.

Following rumors surrounding his status, the 30-year-old running back explained the team's approach to keeping him healthy for the upcoming campaign.

"Obviously when you don't practice, the way the media works now, is a firestorm," McCaffrey said. "This was kind of part of the plan from the jump -- to ramp up pretty big, get nine or 10 practices in, kind of come back down and then ramp up again so we're fresh for the duration."

McCaffrey praised the organization's training staff for structuring his preparation to avoid physical burnout.

"Our staff has done a great job of coming up with specific plans, and I feel great. I feel fresh and it's great to get back out there," McCaffrey said.

Addressing questions regarding whether his injury-riddled 2024 campaign influenced the hiatus, McCaffrey noted that resting during training camp has been standard procedure for him since early in his career.

"I don't think it had anything to do with it," McCaffrey said. "Obviously you want to learn from the past, and going through a full training camp is a lot of work. I've monitored my practice schedule since 2019.

I remember [former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator] Norv Turner used to kick me out of practice in Carolina, just cause. He would say, 'Go find shade.'"

The tailback acknowledged his competitive drive and the importance of relying on coaching staff decisions to maintain long-term stamina.

"Sometimes I can probably be my own worst enemy in how much I love being out there," McCaffrey said. "I want to run, I want to go. I want every play, I'm a competitor, I love it and I think when you have people smarter than you, that understand not just what you've been through, but what we plan on doing this season."

He emphasized that the primary target remains maintaining peak condition for the entirety of the regular season and postseason.

"It's about being fresh for the duration and it's about 17 Sundays and God-willing more weeks after that," McCaffrey said.

Alongside McCaffrey's return, the 49ers activated tight end George Kittle off the physically unable to perform list on Sunday as he continues recovering from a torn right Achilles suffered in January.

Kittle participated in individual drills with the tight ends while sitting out 11-on-11 team sessions as part of his rehabilitation program.

"I want to play in every football game that I possibly can play in, but I'm also aware it's an 18-week season," Kittle said. "If you miss Week 1 and you're playing Week 2, hey, it is what it is. … I'm just going to keep that as my goal, and then we'll adjust from there if we need to."

Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that McCaffrey's practice holdout was precautionary ahead of the 2026 season.

"I think if it wasn't Christian and we were in a game week, I think he would play today," Shanahan said.

McCaffrey recorded an NFL-leading 413 touches across 17 regular-season games and two playoff matchups in 2025. The 49ers complete training camp practices this week before traveling for their preseason finale against the Las Vegas Raiders.
