Shooting and House Fire Leave Multiple Dead in Billings Montana

Multiple adults and children died Sunday evening following a shooting and house fire stemming from a family disturbance in the 300 block of White Star Circle in Billings, Montana.

Law enforcement officers and fire personnel responded to the residence after receiving reports of gunshots around 6:01 p.m. Sunday. Responding units encountered active gunfire coming from the back of the home before the structure became completely consumed by fire within minutes.

Authorities confirmed that the gunman died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The victims inside the home have been identified, though officials are withholding their identities while the investigation proceeds.

Interim Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell detailed the situation during a press conference on Monday afternoon.

"Because of the fire and obviously water that goes to suppress that fire, it’s going to slow our investigation of the crime scene recovery of evidence," O'Donnell said. "So we ask for patience as we complete this investigation."

Emergency crews faced severe tactical and operational hurdles upon arriving at the scene, including limited water accessibility near the residence.

Billings Fire Chief Matt Hoppel explained the complications faced by firefighters trying to extinguish the flames.

"The delay in limited access presented significant challenges, fire conditions continued to worsen, and the residents ultimately became ... consumed by fire," Hoppel said.

Police departments and county agencies warned that gathering evidence from the burned structure would take several days.

Billings Police Sgt. Jeff Stovall addressed the limited availability of public information regarding the incident.

"There are details we simply cannot release at this time," Stovall said.

Local residents near the West End neighborhood reported hearing gunshots and seeing armed deputies deployed across surrounding properties before flames engulfed the structure. Authorities evacuated neighboring homes as precautionary measures during the response.

David Hiller, a nearby resident, recalled hearing the initial disturbance from his home.

"We could hear gunshots," Hiller said. "I looked in my backyard, and there were like sheriffs in my backyard, my neighbor's backyard. They're running around with long guns."

The fire created significant plumes of smoke visible throughout the block as law enforcement took cover behind vehicles.

"It was just like black plumes of smoke, and then a full-on fire erupted," Hiller said. "We don't know what happened. We think we saw a body out front of the house that looked unresponsive."

Hiller noted the typical presence of the family around the residence prior to the tragedy.

"This is a house where you saw a family out front all the time. We don't know," Hiller said. "We just don't know."

Other neighbors expressed shock over the sudden violence occurring in their local community.

Marlon Duke, who lives on the street, observed the emergency scene unfolding.

"This is a quiet neighborhood," Duke said. "And it’s just kind of shocking to see something like this happen in the neighborhood."

Duke reflected on the tragic impact of the incident on the neighborhood.

"It’s just really a sad story, whatever that story is," Duke said.

One injured individual was transported to a local hospital on Sunday evening. The origin of the fire and the motive behind the shooting remain under active investigation by the Billings Police Department and the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office.
