Multiple People Including Children Die in Montana Shooting and House Fire

Multiple people, including children, died in a shooting and house fire in Billings, Montana, on the evening of August 23, 2026, authorities said. The incident occurred in the West End neighborhood and began as a family disturbance. Police responded to reports of shots fired at a home on White Star Circle at 6:01 p.m.

Local officers arrived within about 10 to 15 minutes and heard gunfire from the back of the residence. Shortly after, the house became fully engulfed in flames. Interim Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O'Donnell confirmed that multiple adults and juveniles were among the victims.

He said the victims and the suspect have been identified but declined to release their names or ages.

"Because of the fire and obviously water that goes to suppress that fire, it’s going to slow our investigation of the crime scene recovery of evidence," O'Donnell said. "So we ask for patience as we complete this investigation."

The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being taken to a local hospital. Authorities described the event as a family disturbance and not a random act of violence. "The initial investigation shows that this event started as a family disturbance and was not a random act of violence where the parties were unknown to each other," the Yellowstone County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. "There is no further danger to the public."

Billings Police Sgt. Jeff Stovall said some information is being withheld to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. "There are details we simply cannot release at this time," Stovall said. "First and foremost, the Billings Police Department extends our deepest condolences to everyone affected by this awful tragedy."

Firefighters faced challenges due to limited water access and fewer fire hydrants, which allowed the fire to worsen. "The delay in limited access presented significant challenges, fire conditions continued to worsen, and the residents ultimately became ... consumed by fire," said Billings Fire Chief Matt Hoppel. Neighbors described a chaotic scene with black smoke and flames engulfing the home. Nearby homes were evacuated as a safety precaution but residents were later allowed to return.

The investigation remains active and could take several days to complete due to the unstable crime scene. Authorities plan to release further information after assessing the site.
