Avengers: Infinity War Directors and Actors Reveal Spider-Man's Emotional Death Scene

Directors Joe Russo and actor Tom Holland shared insights into the emotional design behind Spider-Man's death scene in Avengers: Infinity War, aiming to deeply move audiences during the film’s dramatic climax.

In the scene, Peter Parker faces his mortality with fear and vulnerability as he tells Tony Stark, "I don't want to go." This moment was carefully developed to maximize emotional impact, highlighting the mentor-mentee relationship between Stark and Parker.

Joe Russo explained that the original script included a simpler line, "I don't feel so good," but they wanted to amplify the emotional weight, leading to Parker pleading for his life. "I don't mind a good cry in a movie theater, so I was like, how do we get them to really, really cry at this scene?" Russo said.

Russo added, "We milked the s**t out of it; it takes the longest of any [of the deaths]. But also the relationship for the movie, writing backwards, is we know if we're going to break your heart, then we should have a fun relationship that's sort of mentor/mentee, but the mentee is a pain in the butt. And you didn't want him to come all along, and you're trying to protect him, and exactly what you didn't want to happen, happens."

Tom Holland revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that his iconic line "I don't want to go" was either improvised or repeated multiple times as part of an acting exercise to evoke genuine emotion. "It’s just a really, really effective way of bringing up emotions," Holland said.

He described the scene as an amalgamation of acting exercises, improvisation by himself and Robert Downey Jr., and the supportive direction by the Russo brothers. "The brothers giving us the perfect floor to dance on," Holland noted.

The Russo brothers will reunite with Downey Jr. for upcoming Marvel installments Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, with trailers hinting at high expectations following the success of Infinity War and Endgame.
