D23 reveals X-Men reboot cast without Wolverine

Marvel Studios used the D23 fan event to reveal cast for its upcoming MCU X-Men reboot, but Wolverine was notably missing from the ensemble. Kevin Feige and the studio also presented other character announcements linked to the MCU’s expanding mutant lineup. Christopher Abbott was revealed as Professor Charles Xavier, with Kit Connors as Scott Summers, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm.

Samara Weaving was announced as Emma Frost, and Adam Driver was confirmed to play Mister Sinister. One outlet tied the omission of Wolverine to comics logic, pointing to time travel stories commonly used in X-Men. It referenced characters displaced from potential futures, including Bishop and Cable, as part of that long-running narrative device.

The same comics angle referenced Mark Millar’s Old Man Logan storyline, which ended with Wolverine freeing the United States from supervillain overlords while Bruce Banner’s young son traveled with him. It also noted Secret Wars temporarily moved him to Earth-616, where Wolverine was believed dead after molten adamantium.

That analysis said Old Man Logan ensured events from his world did not take place in the 616 timeline by meeting the 616 X-Men and playing roles in multiple comics events, including Civil War 2 and Inhumans vs X-Men. It added that he tracked down and defeated Mysterio, along with other villains, before dying and being buried in his original future after defeating Sabretooth and Mister Sinister. A separate report focused on comics ahead of The Uncanny X-Men #38, describing four Wolverine clones in laboratories beneath Graymalkin Prison. The clones were characterized as damaged mutants made into cheap but brutal knockoffs, all wearing Weapon X experimentation gear and sharing three adamantium-coated claws.

That outlet said Marvel previously introduced multiple Wolverine copycats across Earth-616. It cited Clayton Cortez as Weapon H in 2017, a Wolverine clone created by Mr. Sinister in Spider-Man and the X-Men #6 in 2015, and Wolverine clones such as Shogun and the Wolverines group in later years. In its final detail, the report said The Uncanny X-Men #38 will be available on Nov. 4.
