Walnut Creek residents and city officials are increasingly adopting "The Nut," a lighthearted Gen Z nickname for the East Bay suburb that has gained massive traction across social media platforms like TikTok and Reddit. The moniker was highlighted during an Aug. 18 City Council meeting, where city leaders acknowledged its growing popularity alongside local merchandise featuring the new branding. Walnut Creek Mayor Kevin Wilk addressed the trend during the municipal meeting, noting that he frequently hears the term around town.

"If people are talking about Walnut Creek, then whatever they want to call it, great," said Kevin Wilk, Mayor of Walnut Creek.

Mayor Wilk expressed support for the lighthearted branding after meeting with local entrepreneurs at community events. "If they’re enjoying it, I absolutely believe that it’s said with the most lighthearted intentions and not as derogatory," said Kevin Wilk, Mayor of Walnut Creek.

A recent news report on the nickname garnered 1.6 million views on Instagram, underscoring the widespread interest in the city's changing identity. Local business owner Joey Trautner, founder of the Walnut Creek Spotlight newsletter, began selling hats and T-shirts featuring the moniker to test local demand.

"It was mostly people from outside Walnut Creek," said Joey Trautner, Founder of Walnut Creek Spotlight. Trautner noted that conversations with local residents revealed how deeply the term had resonated across generations. "But then I asked my wife, who’s a high school teacher, and she was like, ‘Yeah, it’s the Nut now.

Everyone calls it that. Nobody calls it the Dub C.’ I think the name is a little tongue-in-cheek.

It hits with Gen Z and even older people, even my parents. I think they prefer the Creek, but they get it," said Joey Trautner, Founder of Walnut Creek Spotlight.

Initial sales of the branded merchandise saw overwhelming demand at local venues and community gatherings like the Locust Street Festival.

"I didn’t think people would actually want this," said Joey Trautner, Founder of Walnut Creek Spotlight. After selling out initial inventory, Trautner organized line updates to manage high buyer volume. "But even before the booth was set up, I had people coming up to me saying, ‘Hey, can I get a hat now? I’m worried they’re going to sell out,’" said Joey Trautner, Founder of Walnut Creek Spotlight.

Mayor Wilk personally observed the retail demand while attending community festivities.

"There was a line of people eight-deep trying to get the shirts," said Kevin Wilk, Mayor of Walnut Creek. The city's mayor noted widespread adoption of the clothing items throughout the evening.

"Then I’m walking around Locust Street later that evening, and I see a bunch of people wearing the shirts and the hats," said Kevin Wilk, Mayor of Walnut Creek. Trautner plans to expand his product line for upcoming regional events in September as public enthusiasm continues to grow.

"I definitely call it the Nut now," said Joey Trautner, Founder of Walnut Creek Spotlight. The newsletter creator reflected on the community's swift adoption of the viral title. "I just think the Nut is a fun nickname that people have embraced and made their own," said Joey Trautner, Founder of Walnut Creek Spotlight.
