US Prepares for Labor Day Closures on September 7

Federal offices, public schools, post offices, and major financial institutions across the United States will shut down operations on Monday, September 7, 2026, in observance of Labor Day.

The nationwide holiday will grant millions of workers a long weekend while marking the unofficial end of the summer season. Physical branches of major commercial banks, including Bank of America and Wells Fargo, will close for the day because the Federal Reserve System observes all 11 official federal holidays, preventing standard transaction processing.

Online banking options and automated teller machines will remain accessible throughout the holiday weekend, though any payments or money transfers scheduled for September 7 will delay processing until business operations resume on Tuesday, September 8.

Labor Day originated in the late 19th century during the rise of the American labor movement. The Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor organized the first parade on September 5, 1882, in New York City, taking inspiration from a similar workers' event held in Toronto, Canada.

Former President Grover Cleveland later endorsed establishing the federal holiday on the first Monday of September instead of May 1, seeking to prevent social unrest associated with May Day labor protests.

"Observed the first Monday in September, Labor Day is an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers," according to the U.S. Department of Labor website.

The federal government outlined that the labor movement pushed for official recognition in the late nineteenth century to celebrate the strength, prosperity, and well-being contributed by workers to the nation.

"The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being," according to the U.S. Department of Labor website.

The September 7 observance is part of the 11 official U.S. federal holidays scheduled for 2026. Following Labor Day, the remaining federal holidays for the year include Columbus Day on October 12, Veterans Day on November 11, Thanksgiving Day on November 26, and Christmas Day on December 25.
