US Defense Firms Rush Low-Cost Drone Interceptors to UAE

Florida defense startup Powerus opened a low-cost drone interceptor assembly facility in the United Arab Emirates to help replenish rapidly depleting air defense stockpiles during the ongoing military conflict with Iran, as reported by The New York Times and Press TV.

The West Palm Beach-based company manufactures its $5,000 Guardian interceptor, derived from a Ukrainian design capable of reaching speeds up to 200 miles per hour. The local Emirates facility currently produces part of the company's 3,000 monthly interceptors, with plans to expand global output to 15,000 units per month by mid-2027.

Standard high-end interceptors like the PAC-3 cost millions of dollars, creating severe inventory strain after retaliatory strikes fired over 500 ballistic missiles and 2,200 drones at target sites in the Persian Gulf nation. The U.S. military inventory has dropped to fewer than 830 Patriot interceptors and under 280 THAAD interceptors, according to Council on Foreign Relations analysis.

Defense giants including Boeing, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin are pitching lower-cost alternatives to address the critical short-range air defense gap. However, defense analysts warn these new systems require testing and complex supply chain adjustments, meaning cheaper interceptors will not immediately resolve short-term munition shortages.

"The push for low-cost munitions is unlikely to have a material effect on the Iran War—at least not anytime soon," said Becca Wasser, Bloomberg Economics's defense lead.

Wasser noted that scaling down costs on exquisite munitions requires long testing processes, though cheaper systems become crucial if conflict continues over extended periods.

"If the Iran war drags on for years, that's when the drive for lower cost interceptors and munitions could have an impact," said Wasser.

Military experts emphasize that low-cost drone interceptors cannot replace high-end ballistic defense systems, leaving a multi-year window of inventory vulnerability for defense networks.

"These newer, lower-cost munitions absolutely should be part of the way we fix this. But we shouldn't be kidding ourselves that they're going to be ready quickly en masse, are operational, and our forces are trained and understand how to use them," said Todd Harrison, American Enterprise Institute defense budget expert.

Harrison added that large-scale availability of these new weapons will likely take years to materialize.

"It will take years, some sooner than others. And I think it remains to be seen if they're going to be available in large quantities sooner than the reorders of the more exquisite existing weapons," said Harrison.

Meanwhile, Iranian military leadership reaffirmed its defense capabilities despite external pressures and international sanctions.

"forceful, regret-inducing and devastating," warned official statements from Tehran regarding any miscalculations by adversaries.

Iranian defense officials emphasized that their domestic defense industry maintains comprehensive readiness across all combat domains.

Defense contractors continue working under new Pentagon framework agreements designed to send demand signals and encourage private capital expenditures for long-term production scaling.

"If you look at the framework agreements we've signed, we've leaned into the ask that the country has made of us. Lockheed Martin has never shied away from stepping up to the line and doing what's been asked," said Johnathon Caldwell, Lockheed Martin vice president of strategic and missile defense systems.

Caldwell stated that industry partners are actively committing funds to accelerate delivery timelines.

"We're in an unprecedented era where speed matters, and we're able to bring capabilities to market in weeks and months, not years and decades. We're putting our money on the table, and our commitment," said Caldwell.
