United Airlines Expands 2027 Routes to 10 International Destinations

United Airlines announced plans on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, to launch 13 new international routes connecting to 10 destinations across Europe and Asia in 2027, marking the carrier's largest global expansion in its history.

The Chicago-based airline will expand its network to include Ljubljana, Slovenia; Okinawa, Japan; Olbia and Catania, Italy; Ibiza and Valencia, Spain; Marseille and Toulouse, France; Terceira, Portugal; and Luxembourg. Seven of these locations currently lack direct U.S. flights.

Executives at the second-most profitable U.S. carrier noted that travelers are increasingly booking open-jaw itineraries to avoid overcrowded primary hubs, driving demand for expanded seasonal service deeper into the autumn months.

"They want to get away from the overcrowded, large European cities," said Patrick Quayle, United's senior vice president who heads global network planning and alliances.

The network expansion capitalizes on long-season travel, with the carrier reporting strong international performance running through October without dropping existing routes to make room for new additions.

"All these new international destinations ... have become much longer seasons instead of just flying during the summer," United CEO Scott Kirby told CNBC's Phil LeBeau on Tuesday. "These go all the way through October. October has become one of our best months of the year."

United is deploying newly acquired long-range Airbus A321XLR narrow-body jets on routes out of Newark Liberty International Airport to destinations such as Luxembourg, Marseille, Ibiza, Valencia, and Toulouse.

"We've opened up more of the world to our customers," chief network planner Patrick Quayle said on a call with reporters. "Next summer, we'll give them more opportunities … to explore places that they may not have previously considered."

Quayle emphasized that the carrier aims to serve diverse consumer demographics, from budget college travelers to luxury vacationers.

"whether you're backpacking in college, you're going to and from Paris, whether you're in your 20s and you're going to a nightclub in Ibiza ... a business trip ... or a vacation or honeymoon in Sardinia," Quayle said.

Highlighting another unique option in the expansion, Quayle noted how the new Slovenia route aligns with the airline's strategy of offering novel destinations.

"If you look at the type of unique destinations that we've been adding," Quayle said, "it fits the profile of it, hook, line and sinker."

The airline is also adding three international routes connecting existing destinations from secondary hubs, linking Los Angeles to Osaka, Denver to Paris, and Washington Dulles to Milan. Additionally, United will introduce service between San Francisco and Sapporo in December, while restarting flights from San Francisco to Tel Aviv.
