Pilot Survives Emergency Water Landing Off Florida Coast

A 23-year-old pilot escaped without injury after making an emergency water landing in the Atlantic Ocean off Boca Raton, Florida, on Saturday morning following multiple mechanical failures. Faith Tenkley was flying a twin-engine Piper PA-39 from Fort Myers to the Bahamas to pick up her parents when the aircraft encountered severe issues. About 15 miles west of Boca Raton, Tenkley experienced mechanical problems and attempted to divert to the local airport.

The situation worsened when the aircraft's landing gear malfunctioned and its right engine failed mid-flight.

Carrying a heavy fuel load, Tenkley opted to ditch the plane in the ocean to avoid a potentially fiery hard landing on a runway. The pilot maneuvered around coastal buildings and paddleboarders before executing a controlled landing in the water at approximately 9:40 a.m.

Lifeguards reached Tenkley within a minute, and authorities transported her to a hospital as a precautionary measure. Following the incident, rumors circulated online regarding the identity of the pilot and the rescue process.

"One of the reasons Faith wanted to talk to me was to clear up misinformation she saw online about the pilot being a guy and a 'surfer girl' rescuing him," wrote journalist Peter Busch on Facebook. The confusion stemmed from Tenkley's attire during her swim to the shore after escaping the sinking aircraft. "Faith was wearing a long skirt over a bikini.

She took off the skirt to swim to shore. People on the beach saw a woman in a bikini and assumed she was a surfer helping the male pilot," Busch added.

The sudden ditching shocked beachgoers who were enjoying their weekend on the Florida coast.

"One second I’m spraying sunscreen on my kid. The next I’m looking up and saying, ‘Is that supposed to be happening?’" said witness Maria Marks. Onlookers noted that the pilot managed to bring the failing aircraft down smoothly despite the emergency conditions. "The plane was making a slow descent and delicately landed into the water," stated Alexis Arizzi, who was nearby on a boat.

The Piper PA-39, registered to USOARFlorida LLC, initially floated on the surface before taking on water.

"The plane is totally intact," noted resident Robert Taplinger. The aircraft eventually sank lower into the Atlantic, leaving only its tail visible as the Federal Aviation Administration launched an investigation into the mechanical failures.
