Donald Trump Campaign Support Faces Tests in Republican Primary Runoffs

Former President Donald Trump campaigned alongside appointed Sen. Darline Graham in South Carolina ahead of Tuesday's high-stakes Republican runoff election. Graham faces a strong challenge from five-term Rep. Ralph Norman for a full six-year Senate term.

Graham's primary campaign encountered friction following a debate performance where she stated that national security was not her primary focus regarding Taiwan and the South China Sea. Several voters attending a rally in Myrtle Beach expressed reservations about her grasp of foreign policy.

South Carolina Republican voter Roger voiced concerns after watching the debate, noting that a incoming senator needs to be properly briefed on international relations.

"Her people should have briefed her a little bit more," said Roger. "Foreign policy is something that — you're going to come in as a new senator, as a rookie, you're gonna have to learn that."

Another conservative attendee, Glenda Clinkscales, indicated she remained undecided despite her strong personal support for Trump.

"Some good answers and some not so good answers," said Glenda Clinkscales. "I'm not so sure about her right now."

Voter Daniel Musick stated he chose to support Norman before attending the rally, citing concerns over Graham's national security answers during the televised debate.

"It's just that she's untested. I don't know enough about her," said Daniel Musick. "Her answer on foreign affairs, when it came to China and Taiwan — it was really unclear that she knew her foreign policy, and to me that was the biggest issue."

Graham addressed the debate feedback during her rally remarks, noting that local voters are focused on domestic issues while defending her background.

"Now the critics say I shouldn't run for the Senate. They say I'm not a politician. You know what I say?

Guilty as charged," said Sen. Darline Graham. "And by the way, President Trump had never served in an elected office before, and I think he's done a damn good job."

Trump publicly backed Graham prior to the event, brushing off media questions about her foreign policy statements.

"I mean, she's going to do what the military wants, and really what the president wants," said Donald Trump.

Some rally participants maintained that the former president's endorsement was sufficient for their vote on Tuesday.

"Honestly, I don't know as much about the platforms there, but if Trump supports her, I do too," said Lynn Spivey.
