Tropical Storm Moke Triggers Hawaii Wind and Flood Warnings

Tropical Storm Moke tracked several hundred miles south of Hawaii on August 24, 2026, prompting flood watches for the Big Island and wind advisories across Maui County as moisture along the system's northern periphery brushed the state.

Meteorologists at the National Weather Service reported that the exposed low-level center of Moke was positioned over 300 miles south-southwest of Kailua-Kona. The storm produced a tight pressure gradient over the Hawaiian Islands, driving locally strong trade winds with gusts reaching up to 50 mph near mountain terrain.

A Flood Watch remains active for the Big Island through Monday afternoon. Deep moisture sheared to the north of Moke is expected to increase rainfall over windward and southeast slopes, where rainfall totals could reach 5 to 10 inches, with localized amounts up to 15 inches.

Weather officials noted that trade winds will gradually ease to moderate strength by Tuesday as Moke continues moving westward away from the island chain. Drier conditions and typical trade wind patterns are projected to return for the remainder of the week.
