Target Pulls Offensive Kids’ Halloween Costume After Backlash

Target removed a children’s Halloween costume after widespread criticism on social media that it resembled racist minstrel show imagery. The costume, sold as the "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume," was accused of evoking blackface caricatures due to its design and promotional images.

The product featured a Black child wearing an orange and black top, solid black gloves, and a mask with a wide toothy smile. Critics compared the costume’s elements to historically offensive minstrel show depictions of Black people.

Target issued an apology stating, "As a company, we know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale."

The retailer acknowledged the costume was "especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners." The company said removing the costume was "an important first step" and that it is reviewing how the item was approved to prevent future occurrences.

This incident adds to a series of controversies Target has faced recently, including backlash over scaling back diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in early 2025, which led to calls for boycotts and impacted sales.

Sheletta Brundidge, a Minneapolis-area business leader, linked the costume controversy to those DEI cutbacks, saying, "You rolled back diversity, so who's in the room, now, to say 'hey, this is wrong?'"

Despite recent efforts to improve its business performance under CEO Michael Fiddelke, Target’s challenges with cultural sensitivity and internal review processes remain under scrutiny, particularly given its diverse customer base.

The costume was sold under Target's Hyde & EEK! Boutique Halloween collection and was removed from the website within days of criticism. Target declined to comment on the product's design approval process.

Target’s stock was reported to have dipped following earlier controversies but showed some recovery with recent quarters. Analysts warn that such incidents could hinder ongoing brand rehabilitation efforts.
