Take-Two Seeks Subpoenas Following Grand Theft Auto 6 Leaks

Take-Two Interactive, the parent publisher of Rockstar Games, filed a court petition requesting federal subpoenas for Microsoft and Discord to uncover the identity of individuals leaking copyrighted Grand Theft Auto 6 footage online on August 20, 2026.

The legal maneuver aims to compel Discord and Microsoft-owned GitHub to produce message logs, IP addresses, phone numbers, and telemetry data linked to the perpetrators, known as CyberLeek, by September 4, 2026.

In court filings submitted to the US District Court in the Southern District of New York, publisher attorneys confirmed the legal request aims exclusively to protect intellectual property.

"The copyrighted material includes but is not limited to audiovisual content, artwork, images, dialogue or other creative elements," according to the legal filing by Take-Two Interactive. "Take-Two, through its counsel of record, has submitted a sworn declaration confirming that the purpose for which the DMCA subpoena is sought is to obtain the identity of an alleged infringer or infringers, and that such information will only be used for the purpose of protecting Take-Two’s rights."

A spokesperson for Discord addressed the legal developments following the court filing.

"will review and comply with valid subpoenas," said a Discord spokesperson.

Microsoft executives also reacted to the ongoing investigation into the leaked materials.

"We are working closely with Take-Two and Rockstar Games to support efforts to protect creative works and intellectual property," said Scott Van Vliet, chief technology officer for Xbox.

Despite ongoing legal pressure, CyberLeek published additional footage displaying explicit non-player character encounters in a nude village setting alongside watermarked demands. The leaker demanded fans dress up as leeks outside Rockstar offices and purchase cryptocurrency to vote on releasing a Lucia-led prologue leak, citing protests against the game's digital-only release format.

According to Bloomberg, Rockstar Games internal management sent morale-boosting emails to staff following the incidents, while former Rockstar Games technical director Obbe Vermeij downplayed the potential damage caused by the leaks. Grand Theft Auto 6 remains scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S on November 19, 2026, ahead of an exclusive gameplay reveal on Netflix set for August 27, 2026.
