Josh Brolin Confirms Sicario 3 Production Starting Soon

Josh Brolin confirmed that the third installment of the "Sicario" film franchise is officially happening, with production expected to begin soon, according to interviews in late August 2026.

The "Sicario" series, created by Taylor Sheridan, focuses on the violent drug cartel wars along the U.S.-Mexico border. The original film debuted in 2015, followed by the 2018 sequel "Sicario: Day of the Soldado," which continued the story with Brolin reprising his role as CIA operative Matt Graver alongside Benicio del Toro.

After the financial success of the second film, plans for a third installment were in development but faced delays, including disruptions caused by the 2023 Writers Guild of America strike. Despite these setbacks, writing was reportedly near completion by 2023.

Josh Brolin, in a recent ScreenRant interview, stated, "It is happening," and added that production will commence "soon."

This marks a significant update from Brolin, who a year earlier described the project as "very, very real" but with many details still uncertain.

Brolin’s update comes amid ongoing questions about the film’s creative team. Denis Villeneuve, who directed the original "Sicario," is unlikely to return as he is currently occupied with completing "Dune: Part 3" and directing the upcoming James Bond film.

Producer Molly Smith mentioned that Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on the "Mission: Impossible" series, is involved with the project, though it remains unclear if he will direct, write, or produce the film.

Regarding the cast, it is not yet confirmed whether Benicio del Toro will reprise his role as Alejandro Gillick. The second film ended with his character recruiting a new figure, leaving his status open for the threequel. Other actors such as Jeffrey Donovan and Raoul Trujillo returned in the sequel, and there has been fan interest in Emily Blunt returning as well.

Producer Thad Luckinbill expressed enthusiasm for continuing the franchise, saying, "We’re hoping to do it, so fingers crossed. It would be great to get to do another one for the fans. And, honestly, for me, too.

Like, I’m a fan of it. Even though I produced it, I wanna see it."

The "Sicario" franchise has been praised for its intense storytelling and cinematography, with the first film especially noted for its atmospheric direction and minimal dialogue.
