Red Sox Void Garrett Crochet Contract Opt Out Amid Injury

Boston Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet had his 2030 contract opt-out clause voided on Sunday after reaching 120 consecutive days on the injured list with a left shoulder injury. The milestone activated a safeguard clause in his six-year, $170 million extension, also adding a $15 million club option for the 2032 season.

Crochet, who was placed on the injured list retroactive to April 26 with left shoulder inflammation, has been working through a throw-progression program to return this season exclusively out of the bullpen.

Addressing the contractual adjustment before Boston's 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants, the left-hander expressed acceptance regarding the situation.

"I’ve long since accepted it," said Garrett Crochet, Red Sox pitcher. "Regardless of that, my goal is to come back and help the team in any way that I can."

Crochet has recently increased his throwing distance to 90 feet with higher intensity. His physical recovery has varied following higher-workload sessions as he builds back his arm strength.

"Recovery has been good," said Garrett Crochet, Red Sox pitcher. "Seeming to increase intensity and volume a tick, weather the storm a little bit the next day, and then a couple of days later when I have the same parameters and guidelines for the throwing."

Crochet noted that his recovery following a high-intensity session on Friday showed improvement over a similar session earlier in the week.

"So I had a high day Tuesday and then I had a high day Friday," said Garrett Crochet, Red Sox pitcher. "And the recovery Friday was better than it was Tuesday. Just kind of continuing to level that up."

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed the pitcher's increased effort during recent workouts.

"Throwing with more intent, which is good," said Chad Tracy, Red Sox interim manager. "So, he’s just going to keep plugging along, and we’ll see how he progresses and where we can get him to."

Because time constraints prevent him from building back up to a starter's workload before the regular season ends, Crochet acknowledged his maximum output upon return would be capped at around two innings.

"What could I build up to, max?" said Garrett Crochet, Red Sox pitcher. "Probably two innings, just looking at the schedule based on when I started throwing and being smart about it."

The club is also managing several other player health updates. Interim manager Chad Tracy shared details regarding remaining roster rehabilitations.

"Up in the air," said Chad Tracy, Red Sox interim manager. "We’ll see how they feel when they come in here [Monday] and figure out what we’re going to do there … what moves we’ll make or if they’re going to go back out and continue to play [in the minors]."

Outfielder Roman Anthony is scheduled to join Triple-A Worcester to continue his rehab assignment after appearing in four games with Double-A Portland. In addition, infielder Trevor Story and utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa are undergoing evaluation in Boston on Monday following rehab stints, while reliever Garrett Whitlock threw from 120 feet as he targets a return from right elbow inflammation.
