Police Called on Journalist at New Jersey Campaign Event
Local police responded to a campaign fundraiser for Representative Tom Kean Jr. in Washington Township, New Jersey, after a reporter from The New York Times was turned away at the door and reported as a trespasser.
Journalist Tracey Tully arrived at the Hawk Pointe Golf Club to cover the event featuring House Speaker Mike Johnson. Kean spokesman Harrison Neely blocked her entry, stating the fundraiser was private, although reporters from other outlets were admitted.
Tully remained in her vehicle in the parking lot to attempt to interview attendees. A officer from the Washington Township Police Department arrived shortly after receiving a trespassing call regarding the journalist.
"I didn't know it was just a nice little reporter waiting for an interview," said Sergeant Dallas Overko, Washington Township Police Department.
Overko entered the venue to investigate the origin of the complaint before informing Tully that she could remain on the property.
"I guess there were some things lost in communication," said Sergeant Dallas Overko, Washington Township Police Department.
Following the event, Tully approached Speaker Johnson in the parking lot to ask about Kean's recent 116-day absence from Congress, which ended on June 30 when Kean disclosed he had received treatment for depression.
"You know, if it were me, I would have done it a little sooner," said Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House. "What he was dealing with affects many millions of Americans, so I think people understand that."
Johnson noted that while he encourages GOP lawmakers to maintain transparency with media outlets, individual campaigns manage press operations independently.
"There are lots of campaigns that handle things differently across the country," said Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House.
The fundraiser aimed to bolster support for Kean as he seeks re-election in New Jersey's competitive 7th Congressional District, a critical seat for maintaining the narrow Republican House majority.
