Phillies Rookie Justin Crawford Adjusts Plate Approach in August

Philadelphia Phillies rookie center fielder Justin Crawford has recorded the strongest offensive stretch of his Major League Baseball career in August 2026, driven by a refined approach against fastballs and key adjustments in plate discipline.

Entering late August, the 22-year-old outfielder slashed .347/.370/.490 across the month, posting a 131 wRC+ and bringing his season metrics to a .270 average with two home runs, 31 RBIs, and 16 stolen bases over 371 plate appearances.

Ahead of a three-game interleague series against the Seattle Mariners on August 24, 2026, Crawford met on the field at T-Mobile Park with Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki, a special assistant to the chairman for Seattle, to seek hitting advice.

Statistical tracking reveals a dramatic reversal in Crawford's swing selection over the course of the season, switching from chasing offspeed pitches early in the year to hunting fastballs in August.

While his overall swing rate remained steady at 53.6 percent in August compared to 50.1 percent in April, his chase rate on offspeed pitches out of the strike zone dropped from 55.2 percent in April down to 16.7 percent in August.

Interim manager Don Mattingly noted earlier in the month that Crawford handled his transition to the big leagues exceptionally well despite early struggles, while teammate Luis Arraez also provided guidance to the rookie after joining Philadelphia.

During the same Seattle series, Crawford also reconnected with distant cousin and Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford, who was drafted by Philadelphia in 2013 before being traded to Seattle in December 2018.
