Philippines Considers Adding Warships Amid South China Sea Tensions

The Department of National Defense (DND) of the Philippines is considering acquiring additional warships to bolster its military capabilities, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. said on Tuesday.

At a congressional budget briefing, he responded to inquiries about plans to buy two more missile frigates from South Korea, stating, "There is an intent to acquire, but the trigger has not yet been pulled."

This move is part of the Philippines' ongoing efforts to modernize its military in response to China's increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea, particularly in areas within the country's exclusive economic zone.

The Philippines has increasingly relied on South Korea for military equipment as it pursues a P2-trillion modernization program over the next decade. The country has purchased warships from HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, based in Ulsan, South Korea.

So far, the South Korean shipbuilder has delivered two Malvar-class missile frigates, with two more currently under construction. Additionally, two Rajah Sulayman-class offshore patrol vessels are active, and four more are planned for delivery.
