PGA TOUR Unveils Match-Play Format For 2028 TOUR Championship

On August 25, 2026, the PGA TOUR announced a reimagined season-ending structure for its competitive model starting in 2028, featuring a two-week match-play TOUR Championship across rotating historic venues following a 90-man regular-season finale.

The new competitive framework will transition from 72-hole stroke play to a postseason format involving the top 32 players from the season-long points list. The season will conclude with three consecutive weeks of competition across two distinct phases.

The regular season concludes with the PGA TOUR Championship Series Finale, a 72-hole stroke-play tournament. The top 90 players on the points list will retain their TOUR cards for the following season, while official purse distributions and the season-long champion will be finalized at the event.

"From the beginning, the goal of the Future Competition Committee was to create an easier-to-follow competitive model for our fans with greater consequence and a stronger season-long narrative," said PGA TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp.

The top 32 golfers from the final standings advance to the standalone TOUR Championship, which marks the first use of match play in the event's history and the first individual match-play event on TOUR since 2023.

Week 1 of the TOUR Championship splits the 32-player field into eight groups of four for three days of round-robin match play. The top two players from each group advance to the second week, with tiebreaker playoffs used if necessary.

Week 2 features the 16 remaining players competing in a four-day placement bracket at a different golf course. All 16 golfers play four matches, and the final two undefeated players compete on the last day to decide the champion.

"Throughout this process, we listened carefully to our fans, players and partners. One message came through clearly: the culmination of our season should be worthy of the journey it takes to get there. The result is a season-ending structure that rewards excellence over the course of the year while building toward a reimagined TOUR Championship. We are creating something different, something distinct within professional golf that can resonate far beyond it," said PGA TOUR CEO Brian Rolapp.

The PGA TOUR will reveal the full lineup of dates and rotating venues for the 2028 season on February 22, 2027, during a live broadcast from its Ponte Vedra Beach headquarters, following an eligibility announcement after the September 14 board meeting.
