PGA Tour Suspends Matt Gogel Six Months for Betting on Golf

The PGA Tour suspended PGA Tour Champions player Matt Gogel for six months on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after an investigation revealed he violated the circuit's integrity rules by placing wagers on professional golf competitions.

The sanction took effect on Sunday, August 23, 2026, immediately following Gogel's tied-30th finish at the Rogers Charity Classic, and will run through February 22, 2027. Tour officials confirmed that Gogel placed bets on golf events but did not wager on any tournaments in which he competed.

According to the PGA Tour, the 55-year-old golfer fully cooperated throughout the disciplinary inquiry into his gambling activity.

"In 2024 and 2025, I unknowingly violated the PGA TOUR policy by placing small recreational wagers on golf," said Matt Gogel, PGA Tour Champions player. "I want to be clear that these wagers were not placed on regular PGA TOUR events, PGA TOUR Champions events or any tournament in which I participated."

The PGA Tour Integrity Program strictly forbids all covered individuals, including players, caddies, agents, and tournament staff, from placing wagers on any professional or elite amateur golf competition worldwide. Violations carry penalties ranging from mandatory educational courses to maximum fines of $500,000, suspensions, or permanent bans from sanctioned events.

"I would never knowingly violate the integrity of the game of golf," said Gogel. "I made an honest mistake and I look forward to playing in 2027 on the PGA TOUR Champions."

A spokesperson for the PGA Tour declined to specify the exact tournaments or outcomes involved in Gogel's wagers, as reported by Golfweek. Gogel currently holds the 20th spot in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, having accumulated over $760,000 across 18 events in 2026, including a runner-up finish at the ISPS Handa Senior Open in July.
