Pete Fairbanks Exits Marlins Game With Right Hand Nerve Irritation

Miami Marlins closer Pete Fairbanks was removed from Monday night's game against the Boston Red Sox at loanDepot park after experiencing nerve irritation in his right hand.

The 32-year-old relief pitcher issued a leadoff walk to Mickey Gasper in the top of the ninth inning during a 2-2 tie before calling for medical assistance. Fairbanks motioned toward the dugout following his fifth pitch, a 96 mph four-seam fastball, according to mlb.com.

Fairbanks departed the field alongside manager Clayton McCullough and a member of the training staff without throwing any warmup pitches. Right-hander Tyler Zuber replaced Fairbanks on the mound and subsequently allowed a go-ahead triple to Anthony Seigler.

The nerve condition is a recurring issue for the veteran stopper, who previously landed on the 15-day injured list with right hand nerve irritation in May. Fairbanks will undergo further medical evaluation prior to Tuesday's game to determine whether another stint on the injured list will be required, according to reports from Marlins Radio Network and NBC Sports.

If Fairbanks is sidelined, relief pitcher Calvin Faucher is expected to assume the primary closer role for Miami.
