Perseid Meteor Shower Could Intensify in 2028 via Jupiter Gravity
The annual Perseid meteor shower peaked overnight on Aug. 12-13, 2026, delivering clear viewing conditions across the Northern Hemisphere while scientists projected a massive surge in meteor activity by 2028 due to Jupiter's gravitational pull.
Earth intersects the debris stream of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle each August, where cometary particles colliding with the upper atmosphere burn bright at 37 miles per second. The 2026 peak benefited from a moonless sky, allowing stargazers to observe up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.
Astronomical calculations show that Jupiter passes near the particle trail of Comet Swift-Tuttle once every 12 years, shifting meteoroid orbits closer to Earth's atmospheric path. Scientists indicate this gravitational interaction could elevate hourly meteor rates significantly in upcoming years.
Predictive computer models help identify potential activity surges, though particle density within the stream varies across thousands of miles. Meteor experts suggest monitoring the 2027 display to gauge the magnitude of the predicted 2028 outburst.
"Jupiter passes close to a portion of the stream of particles generated by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle once every twelve years," said Robert Lunsford, Meteor expert at American Meteor Society. "The timing and position of this intersection determines if the particles will pass closer or further from Earth. The 2028 passage indicates that some particles will shift into an orbit closer to Earth so that hourly rates could be higher than usual."
Lunsford emphasized the limitations of current forecasting models regarding particle concentration inside the stream.
"The results of the 2027 display should provide a clue," said Lunsford. "If rates during 2027 are enhanced to at least 100 per hour, then we can expect 200-300 per hour for 2028."
Observational conditions in 2027 will face interference from a waxing moon four days before full phase, whereas 2028 will feature a third-quarter moon rising after midnight.
"This is much better than having a full moon, but the faintest meteors may still be obscured if your sky is not transparent," said Lunsford. "You could also view prior to moonrise for the 2028 event, but the radiant will be low. The timing of greatest intensity seems to be between 23-00 Universal Time on Aug.13/14, 2027 and 5-6 UT on Aug. 12, 2028."
Local astronomical organizations saw record attendance during the 2026 display. The Prince George Astronomical Society welcomed an estimated 356 visitors on the first night of peak viewing on Aug. 13 at the Prince George Observatory, raising $317 in donations to maintain its 50-year-old 24-inch telescope facility.
Society leadership highlighted the importance of clear weather following several consecutive years of cloudy conditions during the Perseid peak.
"It's so funny because the first night of the Perseid meteor shower has been cloudy for the past three, four years in a row," said Malhar Kendurkar, President of Prince George Astronomical Society. "Then tonight we are lucky because it's not gonna be cloudy and there's no moon, not to mention it's gonna be clear for all three nights."
The volunteer team managed facility tours, educational lectures, and telescope viewings throughout the evening.
"It was excellent. All four of us are volunteers and we are exhausted after tonight," said Kendurkar. "We had about 356 people come through, which is very impressive."
Visitors experienced clear views of the Milky Way core along with frequent meteor sightings past midnight.
"When it gets dark and especially when there is no moon like tonight and for the next three nights, you can actually see the entire Milky Way," said Kendurkar. "You will be able to see the centre of our Milky Way galaxy where the supermassive black hole is. Also, just being out on the land and talking to people who are interested in astronomy, watching meteors and feeling the excitement from people when they see meteors for the first time. It's great to be out and have people visit here and experience the thrill."
Funding challenges from recent reductions in regional gaming grants have made public event donations critical to maintaining facility operations.
"Last year there have been several cutbacks to the gaming grants we received and we didn't get the full amount that we were asking for," said Kendurkar. "Nights like the Perseid meteor shower night or even our regular open house events are really important for us to actually keep our doors open and maintain this facility because our telescope is close to 50 years old and even maintaining the entire facility has cost us a lot."
The organization actively recruits new community members to support its ongoing public outreach and stargazing sessions.
"We currently have excellent volunteers and without volunteers we wouldn't be able to run this observatory. However, we are always looking to find new volunteers. Of course, you don't have to be an expert in astronomy to join," said Kendurkar.
Community members noted the broader social and personal impact of participating in public astronomy events.
"It really speaks to our presence in the community that we are growing year after year. As well, I think people are looking for something to do with family, with friends and astronomy takes us outside of ourselves. It's just such a wonderful way to connect with community but also get underneath the majesty of the night sky," said Robyn Kendurkar, Secretary of Prince George Astronomical Society.
Organizers noted that public interest centers on shared discovery and the natural spectacle of the night sky.
"I love hearing everyone's personal story and journey about how they found us and why they love coming to view," said Kendurkar. "While many stories are different, there's a common thread, and the common thread is that people love magic. People love that experience of looking at the night sky, learning something new and being part of a community, and that's what we did here tonight."
The Perseid meteor shower remains active annually through late August as Earth clears the remaining particle field of Comet Swift-Tuttle.
