Moon Reaches Waxing Gibbous Phase Ahead of August Full Moon

Skywatchers can observe the Moon in its Waxing Gibbous phase as of August 24, 2026, with 86 percent of its surface illuminated as it approaches the upcoming Full Moon.

Data from NASA's Daily Moon Guide tracker indicates that the lunar surface illumination has steadily expanded throughout the month, progressing from 24 percent visibility during the Waxing Crescent phase on August 17 to 70 percent on August 22.

According to NASA tracker information, observers viewing the Moon without visual aids on August 24 can spot lunar features including the Mares Vaporum, Tranquillitatis, and Fecunditatis. Binoculars provide views of the Clavius Crater, Mare Frigoris, and Mare Nectaris, while telescopes reveal the landing sites of the Apollo 11, 14, and 17 missions.

Earlier in the lunar cycle, the First Quarter phase officially occurred on August 20, reaching its exact half-lit moment at 8:16 a.m. IST, as reported by Moneycontrol. During that phase, sunlight struck the Moon at an angle along the terminator boundary, casting distinct shadows across lunar craters and ridges visible across India after sunset.

According to NASA, the Moon moves through a complete lunar cycle lasting approximately 29.5 days as it orbits Earth. The full sequence transitions through eight distinct phases: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Third Quarter, and Waning Crescent.

The current Waxing Gibbous phase will continue over the coming days until the next Full Moon occurs on August 28, 2026.
