Patriots Keep Kayshon Boutte Bench Warm Amid Trade Speculation

New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte sat out Saturday night's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, sparking speculation regarding his roster security amid offseason trade rumors and a viral sideline interaction with rookie Nick DeGennaro.

During the late fourth quarter of the match, Patriots rookie quarterback Behren Morton threw a 37-yard game-winning touchdown pass to DeGennaro. After scoring his first NFL touchdown, DeGennaro spiked the ball and left it on the field.

Boutte retrieved the ball from the end zone and returned it to DeGennaro on the sideline to preserve the milestone item.

"This is your ball. I'm gonna give it to one of them to pack it for you. Don't ever drop your ball," Boutte told DeGennaro on the sidelines.

Cameras captured the veteran wideout addressing the rookie sternly before celebrating the accomplishment with him on the field.

"Don't ever drop your ball on the ground," Boutte said. "This is your FIRST touchdown catch."

The interaction generated fan support on social media for New England to retain Boutte, who faces roster competition following offseason receiver additions. The Patriots acquired A.J. Brown from the Eagles and Romeo Doubs from the Green Bay Packers, while parting ways with Stefon Diggs.

Despite trade rumors persisting since free agency and public support from quarterback Drake Maye, head coach Mike Vrabel's staff held Boutte out of the preseason contest. Boston Sports Journal reporter Greg Bedard provided analysis on the team's decision to hold the veteran receiver out of gameplay.

"I think it's definitely notable that Kayshon Boutte did not play…At least for now I think that indicates to me that they are not trading Kayshon Boutte, at least not anytime soon or at least they're trying…" said Greg Bedard, reporter for Boston Sports Journal.

The Patriots must finalize their official 53-man roster before the start of the 2026 regular season in approximately two weeks.
